Remove Beirut-Like Blight UrgesBeggs

Ulster Unionist MLA Roy Beggs has expressed his frustration at the length of time it is taking to demolish the empty and heavily vandalised flats around the green at Craigyhill, Larne. In a statement the East Antrim MLA said: “It is deeply frustrating for residents who live near the green at Craigyhill that the demolition of the flats at Dromaine Drive and Cairngorm Drive is taking so long to achieve.  Myself and local Councillor Maureen Morrow met with NI Housing Executive management a year ago, and at that point we were told that the wheels were in motion, with just legal formalities from the Board of the Housing Executive, and the approval of the Minister for Social Development required.  Subsequently in a reply to a question I placed at the Assembly, the DSD Minister confirmed that 58 flats would be demolished in total; 34 flats at Cairngorm Road, 8 flats … Continue reading

Beggs Welcomes Park and Ride facility at Jordanstown Train Halt

Roy Beggs MLA has welcomed the investment of £600.000 from the Department of Regional Development to develop a park and ride facility at Jordanstown Railway Station. Roy Beggs said, “Many commuters live beyond walking distance on their local railway station, and the provision of improved park and ride facilities is vital to encourage greater use of public transport. I am aware that the lack of car parking provision around Jordanstown has caused tension with residents in the past and so I believe this new park and ride facility will also be welcomed by local residents. The new CAF 4000 trains which are now operating on the Larne line are proving to be very popular and are encouraging even more people to avoid the traffic congestion and Office City Centre car parking costs. The provision of additional park and ride facilities will enable even more people to take the benefits of … Continue reading

Wilson rules out school merger

The North Eastern Education and Library Board has put forward a proposal that would see Larne Grammar School and Larne High School amalgamated into a co-operational school of 1200 pupils aged 11-19. The recommendation was part of a new draft area plan published by the Board, which sets out their proposals to tackle falling pupil enrolment numbers throughout the province. The report – which is an early draft and subject to amendment or rejection by the Minister for Education – contained a second option for the two schools, which suggested that the status quo should be maintained. When the document was leaked to a Belfast newspaper earlier this year, the Board was inundated with calls from concerned parents. But DUP representative Mr Wilson has dismissed the report as a “cynical piece of political manoeuvring” and accused the board of “pandering” to the Education Minister, John O’Dowd. “I want to reassure … Continue reading
