Roy Beggs MLA Speech on Bovine Tuberculosis Report

Ulster Unionist MLA for East Antrim Roy Beggs has spoken in a stormont debate following publication of a DARD Committee report on Bovine Tuberculosis: Mr Beggs: I declare an interest as my parents run a suckling cow family enterprise. I notice that the Northern Ireland Audit Office has updated the Agriculture and Rural Development Committee on public expenditure on bovine TB over the past 15 years. It is some £317 million, which is a huge sum of public money. Some £132 million was spent on compensation to farmers, some £86 million was spent on payments to private vets for herd testing, £71 million was spent on DARD staff costs and other costs beyond that. However, the cost to the industry is even more. A further £200 million per year is the estimated cost to farmers of the disruption involved in testing. For example, a farmer may have to transport cattle … Continue reading

Hundreds oppose national park plan for Glens at UFU meeting

Farmers were joined by residents and businesses at the event in the Sheskburn Hall, Ballycastle, where UFU president Harry Sinclair said: “Farmers and the wider community in the Antrim Coast and Glens area who attended our meeting have overwhelmingly expressed their outright opposition to a national park in their locality. “Once again, a very clear message has been sent to the Environment Minister Alex Attwood that farmers and others do not want and will not support a national park in their area.” Mr Sinclair added that recently the minister scrapped plans for a national park in the Mournes due to the level of opposition. “And we are in no doubt that the same depth of opposition is present in the other areas of Northern Ireland earmarked in the National Park proposals,” he declared. “This has been demonstrated clearly with this meeting in north Antrim. Farmers’ genuine concerns about issues such … Continue reading

Courthouse Closure a Blow to Larne

Ulster Unionist MLA Roy Beggs Jnr has expressed his disappointment that Larne is one of 4 Courthouses to be closed across Northern Ireland as a cost cutting measure by Justice Minister David Ford. Mr Beggs, the only East Antrim MLA to personally respond to the public consultation document earlier in the year commented; “Confirmation that Larne Courthouse will be closed sadly comes as no surprise. There have been successive plans to close the Courthouse and centralise justice services elsewhere over the years. In the past however, local representatives – led by the former MP had been able to convince the authorities not to go ahead. http://www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm200102/cmhansrd/vo020417/halltext/20417h03.htm This time the consultation did prove to be merely cosmetic, and I believe the decision to close was taken long ago. Nevertheless I and my Ulster Unionist Party colleagues- who attended the public meeting in the Courthouse in the Spring- did at least make … Continue reading
