Roy Beggs condemns attacks on Alliance Party Offices and Police

Roy Beggs MLA has condemned the attack on the Alliance Party Offices and Police in Carrickfergus. The Ulster Unionist East Antrim MLA said, “There can be no excuse for this arson attack and for the attack on the Police using bottles and stones whilst they were trying to prevent criminal activity and trying to uphold law and order.’ “Most local people who gathered sought to peacefully protest against the decision to remove the Union Flag from Belfast City Hall. I would urge an end to this lawlessness by the few. Such criminality does nothing for the Union. People need to engage in constructive action to strengthen the union, not destructive, illegal actions that weaken it. As my Party Leader said “what unionism needs today is brains, not brawn.”’

Narrow Water: Bridge plan has ‘smell’ says DUP’s Wilson

4 December 2012 Last updated at 13:08 ET The cross-border bridge will stretch from County Down to County Louth The finance minister has told the Assembly he believes there is “a political smell” about the application to build a bridge at Narrow Water. Sammy Wilson questioned the speed with which environment minister Alex Attwood granted Article 31 planning permission to the proposal for the bridge between counties Down and Louth. He called for an investigation into the planning process. Mr Attwood rejected the minister’s comments in an intervention. However, he was asked to sit down by deputy speaker Roy Beggs, who explained that only one minister was permitted to speak in a debate. Earlier in the debate, the SDLP’s Karen McKevitt had described the proposed bridge as “a genuinely symbolic cross-border project”. Ms McKevitt was proposing her party’s motion calling for the finance minister to ensure that the remaining investment … Continue reading

Roy supports Larne Jubilee Roundabout

Ulster Unionist Party MLA Roy Beggs Jnr has criticised a Sinn Fein campaign against the awarding of planning approval for a decorative Crown Structure marking the Queen’s Jubilee at a roundabout in Larne as ‘petty, sectarian and confrontational’. SF MLA McMullan who lives in Cushendall, 25 miles north of the relevant roundabout at Circular road, wrote a badly spelt and punctuated objection letter referring to creating a ‘flashpoint’. The 49 other objections were from people who signed a standard letter, none of whom are demonstrated as being local to the site. Ulster Unionist MLA for East Antrim Roy Beggs Jnr said: “It is disappointing, although predictable that Sinn Fein should be campaigning against an environmental improvement scheme, which at the very least has created an interesting, and in most people’s opinion, an attractive feature out of an otherwise nondescript roundabout. To my knowledge no local residents have any problem with … Continue reading
