P&O Investment in Cairnyan Good for Larne

Ulster Unionist MLA Roy Beggs Jnr has said he hopes the investment in new quay facilities at the P&O owned port at Cairnryan is a sign of continued commitment by the shipping company to the Larne- Cairnyan route. Mr Beggs said: “Given that the P&O group own both the Port of Larne and the Port at Cairnyan, the announcement of major investment in new roll on roll off berthing facilities at the Scottish side is good news all-round. Such a financial commitment to the route is something we spoke about when an Ulster Unionist delegation including our local councillors and Jim Nicholson MEP met with Port of Larne senior Management last year. We have been very concerned at the loss of routes and operators from the port of Larne in recent years. In that context P&O’s commitment to Larne/Cairnryan is welcome news and hopefully a harbinger for the safeguarding of … Continue reading

Beggs Decries Bank Withdrawal from East Antrim

Commenting on the imminent closure of Bank of Ireland branches in East Antrim, Ulster Unionist MLA Roy Beggs Jnr said: “With closures of branches announced for Larne, Carrickfergus and Ballyclare, Bank of Ireland are effectively withdrawing from our district. They seem to be leaving local customers with little alternative but to take their business elsewhere.” Mr Beggs added, “ I have been advised by the Bank of Ireland that they are “are investing in a modern branch network that provides customers with easy access to banking services and is fully integrated with our online, phone and mobile channels.” However, a large percentage of our community, particularly the older generation are used to the personal touch that a local bank provides and are not up to speed with or confident in online Banking.” “ Coming hard on the heels of the closure of the Northern Bank in Whitehead, and the recent … Continue reading

Ulster Unionist Health spokesperson, Roy Beggs MLA has called on the Health Minister to bring forward legislation to ban smoking in cars carrying children after it was revealed that levels of childhood asthma in the UK have fallen since the introduction of the smoking ban in enclosed public spaces. The East Antrim MLA said: “It is very encouraging to learn that there has been a significant drop in the amount of children being admitted to hospital because of their asthma since the ban on smoking in enclosed public spaces came into effect.” “The evidence is indisputable; young people are particularly vulnerable to exposure of second hand smoke, much more so than adults. Children’s bodies are still developing, and exposure to the poisons at this stage puts them at risk of severe respiratory diseases. Exposure is also known to cause asthma, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), bronchitis, pneumonia, middle ear infection … Continue reading

Beggs urges Northern Health Trust to appoint designated support staff for pain management clinics. East Antrim MLA Roy Beggs has called on the Northern Health & Social Care Trust to appoint designated support staff for pain management clinics, in line with other HSC Trusts in Northern Ireland. Mr Beggs said; “Pain management services are critical for the recovery of patients following illnesses, as well as those who suffer from chronic pain. It is therefore imperative that the service they provide is of the highest level. ‘I wrote to the Health Minister and asked him to break down by HSC Trust, the number of staff working in specialist pain services. The Northern HSC Trust was found to be the only Trust with no designated staff to support pain management consultants. This is not in line with other HSC Trusts who have at least one Specialist Nurse in order to assist the … Continue reading
