Consultation on care home closures

The board of the trust agreed the move at a meeting on Thursday. Around half of all care homes in Northern Ireland are set to close as part of the Transforming Your Care (TYC) programme, which was recently agreed by Health Minister Edwin Poots. However the union Unite revealed on Wednesday that all nine homes operated by the Northern Trust are earmarked for closure by 2018. Speaking after the board meeting, Health and Social Care Board chief executive John Compton said residential care may be the most appropriate choice for some older people, but is not what others want – and TYC is about providing a range of alternatives. “The board supports the trend towards independent living at home focussing on helping people remain at home for as long as possible or in supported living accommodation and offering more choice and control about the type of care available to older … Continue reading

Children’s heart surgery set for Dublin

A consultation was launched after the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children was deemed unsustainable due to the numbers of patients it deals with – around 90 per year. The board recommended developing a children’s cardiology centre in Belfast, but said it will not be a 24/7 service. John Compton, the Chief Executive of the Health and Social Care Board, said: “Our job is to assess a population and say how best should we provide services to that population? “In this context, it is much better, I believe, to build a service round an all Ireland solution. Rather than leave a service which has uncertainty and which has fragility – that I think is irresponsible,” he added. In a statement, the Department of Health confirmed that a working group’s preferred option was for surgery and interventional cardiology to be carried out at a new children’s hospital in Dublin. Enhanced transport … Continue reading

Roy Again Challenges DUP U turn on Closing Trust Residential Homes

Commenting on news that the Northern Health Trust are proposing to close all 9 of their remaining statutory residential homes, Ulster Unionist Health spokesman Roy Beggs MLA said: “I am shocked that Minister Poots’ ink is no sooner dry on his decision to close half of all the statutory homes across Northern Ireland, now the Northern Health and Social Care Trust are already proposing the closure of the remaining Trust Residential care places.” “I have been warning for some time that widespread closures would be part of the outworking of part of the Transforming Your Care proposals, endorsed in its entirety by the Minister for Health Edwin Poots. However, even in the worst case scenario I never envisaged the Trust proposing a total closure of all of their residential care homes by 2017. “I have also asked, but have yet to receive an answer, to a simple question: what has … Continue reading
