Roy Welcomes Completion of Rail Track Work

Ulster Unionist MLA Roy Beggs has welcomed the completion of the railway track upgrade on the Larne Line, and Translink’s intention to remove the speed restrictions associated with track conditions between Whitehead and Larne ‘in the very near future’. The East Antrim MLA said, “The new continuous welded rail will further improve the passenger experience, and together with the new trains will enable staff to provide a really high quality rail service. The reduced noise from the welded track will also result in less annoyance for those living close to the track. This will support even greater rail passenger growth.” The most recent project has seen 4.5 miles of track re-railed. Track was also remodelled in Larne Harbour and lowered in Larne Town to facilitate platform extension works. Roy Beggs MLA continued, “I have been informed that completion of additional civil engineering work will enable the removal of the temporary … Continue reading

Beggs hits out at latest “shocking” A&E Waiting Time statistics

Beggs hits out at latest “shocking” A&E Waiting Time statistics The Ulster Unionist Party’s Health spokesperson Roy Beggs MLA has described the latest statistics to be released (for April) regarding Accident & Emergency waiting time statistics as “truly shocking”. Mr Beggs said: “According to Provisional Emergency Care Waiting Time Information for April 2013, the percentage of patients being seen within four hours at A&E departments were 62.8% at Antrim Area, 61.6% at Craigavon Area, 61.3% at the Ulster Hospital and 59.5% at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast. These are truly shocking statistics. Only last week the BBC reported how the NHS in England and Wales was deemed to be in crisis due to the number of hospitals whose A&E departments were failing to meet the 95% target for seeing patients within four hours. To put things in perspective, the statistics for last month show that in Northern Ireland only … Continue reading

Roy Questions Minister and Officials on Care Homes at Stormont Health Committee

The Stormont Committee on Health, Social Services and Public Safety received a briefing from Health Minister Edwin Poots and senior officials including John Compton- Chair of the Health and Social Care Board on “Residential Homes — Proposed Closures”. Ulster Unionist Party MLA Roy Beggs asked the following questions: Mr Beggs: I want to talk about this issue of being surprised at the speed at which the trusts wish to close residential care homes. Given that four or five years earlier some of the trusts wanted to close all the homes, why did it surprise you that some of them wanted to go to the max of their capability in TYC? Mr Compton: We thought that because we had process that had worked locally in the South Eastern and Belfast Trust areas, where we closed homes that tended to be very local and have a very local debate about the particular … Continue reading
