Roy Beggs MLA pledges support for the introduction of standardised packaging in Northern Ireland

Roy Beggs MLA from East Antrim, is standing up for standardised packaging. The Assembly voted for the Legislative Consent Motion (LCM) earlier this year and we expect the Northern Ireland Executive to fully support the LCM when it is finally approved by the Secretary of State for Health in London in 2015.   This follows an extraordinary meeting where two All Party Groups – Heart Disease and Stroke, and Cancer came together for the first time ever to highlight the growing concern around the impact of tobacco packaging and marketing on younger members of society as well as the importance of smoking prevention.  Both All Party Groups have the support of five major charities– Stroke Association, British Heart Foundation, NI Chest Heart & Stroke, Cancer Focus NI and Cancer Research UK.   Renowned expert, Professor John Britton, from the Royal College of Physicians, Tobacco Advisory Group also provided strong evidence … Continue reading

Beggs questions cost of enforcing fine defaults

Ulster Unionist MLA Roy Beggs has highlighted the disproportional current cost of fine enforcement services. Speaking after the issue was raised during a meeting of the Public Accounts Committee,  the East Antrim MLA also questioned why the Northern Ireland Courts and Tribunal Service is taking two more years before a system to modernise this will be implemented. Roy Beggs MLA said; “Over the past number of years there has been an increasing number of people ending up in prison for the non-payment of a fine. The justice system in Northern Ireland seems to live in a different world.  At present a fine default of as little as £50 could result in disproportionate, bureaucratic, inefficient response from our legal system. “The costs involved in taking legal action against a fine defaulter are significant. Beggs Attends Home-Start Manifesto Launch

Ulster Unionist East Antrim representative Roy Beggs MLA has recently attended the Home-Start manifesto launch at Parliament Buildings, where he spoke of his support for the good work that the group does in East Antrim. Ulster Unionist Party Leader Mike Nesbitt MLA was also in attendance. Roy Beggs MLA said “Home-Start do excellent work in providing our children with safe places to play; support when their parents suffer from mental illness and protection from hunger and poor nutrition. The launch of their manifesto outlined how they envisage that they can make it happen.” Mr Beggs continued; “I am aware that 1,500 families are being supported by 900 volunteers in Northern Ireland, with 40% of the families that Home-Start supports in Northern Ireland, living in poverty.
