East Antrim: Sammy Wilson in pole position to take seat

Among the eight candidates the people of East Antrim can vote for in the Westminster general election are Sammy Wilson, Ruth Wilson and Alex Wilson. Sammy reckons the majority will go for Sammy. He’s almost certainly correct. Still, there must be a little niggle of worry that the proliferation of Wilsons might bamboozle some of the voters as they place their Xs beside the candidate of their choice on May 7th. Which is why Wilson – Sammy, the outgoing MP – started his canvassing on April Fool’s Day. The constituency is 60 per cent urban and includes towns such as Larne and Carrickfergus and also parts of Newtownabbey, effectively a suburb of Belfast, and 40 per cent rural. It takes in three of the nine Glens of Antrim, Glenaan, Glenariff and Glendun. UK election: SDLP’s Mark Durkan stuck in middle in Foyle SF says North should be able stay in … Continue reading

East Antrim MLA Roy Beggs. INCT 17-704-CON East Antrim Westminster candidate Roy Beggs has condemned paramilitary gangs for acting as “self-appointed judge, jury and executioners” in the Larne area. Following several vicious assaults in the town and the erection of a paramilitary mural in Craigyhill, the Ulster Unionist MLA has urged the public to assist the PSNI in tackling criminal activity “from whatever source it comes”. And he has also welcomed an assurance that more officers will deployed to Larne. Mr Beggs said: “I recently met Superintendent Ryan Henderson and Chief Inspector Stephen McCauley, senior PSNI officers who have a responsibility for policing in Carrickfergus and Larne following the reorganisation of policing to the new council boundaries. “I highlighted my concern on a number of local policing issues and that response policing officers have been based outside the area, resulting in significant travel time during each shift. “It is clear … Continue reading

East Antrim MLA Roy Beggs recently contacted the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment on behalf of a number of constituents, including business people, who had raised the issue with him. A petition indicating the need in the area was also passed to the department.
