Councillor Andrew Wilson. INLT-21-700-con NEWS East Antrim MLA Roy Beggs, UUP Councillor Andrew Wilson and former Mayor of Larne Martin Wilson spoke out after the Health and Social Care Board (HSCB) approved a public consultation on the Northern Trust’s proposals that the home should remain open and that a ban on admissions be lifted. Roy Beggs Stressing that no decision has been made, the HSCB said that the admissions policy will not change pending the consultation. The board also said the decision will not affect current permanent residents, who can remain in their existing home for as long as they wish, and as long as their care needs can continue to be met there. Stormont on brink of collapse: Uncharted waters after welfare cuts bill is sunk

Petitions of concern cause debate to end in stalemate Politicians faced the media yesterday to defend their party’s stance on the failed debate: the DUP’s Arlene Foster, Nigel Dodds and Sammy Wilson Sinn Fein’s John O’Dowd Alliance leader David Ford By Noel McAdam – 27 May 2015 The Assembly is today staring into an abyss after a crucial vote to implement welfare reforms failed. With Stormont now teetering on the brink of collapse, the lack of progress on the legislation means Government departments will run out of money by the end of July. Roy Beggs MLA has expressed his disappointment that the Education Minister has approved the expansion of Ulidia Integrated College ahead of the proposed merger of Downshire College and Carrickfergus College indicated in the area plan. Roy Beggs said, “It is disappointing that the Minister has approved the expansion of Ulidia Integrated College ahead of the area plan proposed merger of Carrickfergus College and Downshire School.  Post Primary Pupil numbers have been dropping in the Carrickfergus area and the expansion proposal for one particular School in advance of the area plan to amalgamate Schools would add to the financial pressures at Carrickfergus College and Downshire School where the majority of additional pupils would be expected to be attracted from. In my own response to the consultation, I had indicated my support for the expansion of Ulidia Integrated School were it to occur at the same time as Downshire School and Carrickfergus … Continue reading

Increasingly unhinged Sinn Fein philosophy threatens the future of the institutions – Beggs

Ulster Unionist Social Development spokesperson, Roy Beggs MLA, has warned Sinn Fein that they will need to accept responsibility for the ensuing months of swingeing cuts that could now impact every Executive Department – including Health and Education. Roy Beggs said: “Sinn Fein’s opposition to the Welfare Reform Bill, aside from being a major somersault of their position as recently as February, has now firmly put the Assembly’s finances in a downward spiral. “By Sinn Fein blocking the Welfare Bill the Executive not only has to continue to pay over £2m a week in penalties, but now it is unlikely to secure the borrowing required for the Voluntary Exit Scheme. Departments right across the Executive were relying on the VES to deliver savings in the anticipation that it would at least try to help balance their respective budgets. “It now appears quite likely that Executive Ministers will simply not be … Continue reading
