Welfare reform finally voted through – but over stiff opposition

Stormont Assembly members have voted to allow the Government to finally roll out welfare reform in Northern Ireland. The motion tabled by the DUP’s Mervyn Storey was passed by 70 votes to 22, with the backing of the power-sharing administration’s two largest parties – the DUP and Sinn Fein – after a long debate in Parliament Buildings. UUP and SDLP members were among those MLAs who voiced strong opposition to the move. The passage of the motion (known as a Legislative Consent Motion) enables changes to Northern Ireland’s benefits system to be enacted by the Westminster government. The step is part of Tuesday’s ‘Fresh Start’ political deal struck by the DUP, Sinn Fein and the British and Irish governments. The agreement resolved the vexed wrangle over the Assembly’s non-implementation of the Government’s welfare reforms, and a number of other disputes that had pushed the coalition Executive to the verge of … Continue reading

Beggs Seeks Action on Discrepancy in Beef Pricing Between NI & rest of UK

East Antrim Ulster Unionist Party MLA Roy Beggs Jr has questioned the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development on what action she plans to take or has taken in relation to a discrepancy in beef pricing between Northern Ireland and other parts of the United Kingdom, during question time at the Northern Ireland Assembly.   Mr Beggs asked the Minister “to detail what action is being taken to remove the discrepancy between beef pricing paid to local farmers compared to those to farmers in other parts of the United Kingdom?”   Minister Michelle O’Neill MLA responded saying, “… I do understand the concerns of farmers who feel that they are not getting a fair price for their produce in comparison to their counterparts in Britain.  A 2013 Livestock and Meat Commission study examined the beef price differential.
