Progress made on anti-metal thefts Bill

East Antrim MLA Roy Beggs has successfully progressed his Scrap Metal Dealers Bill through to the Assembly’s committee scrutiny stage. The Private Members Bill seeks to create an audit trail of those selling scrap metal to dealers. Addressing the Assembly, the Ulster Unionist representative talked about the local impact of metal theft and the need for such legislation. He there had been several incidents in Gleno “that have shown me from experience that this has been a major problem”. “A new set of street lights was installed by Roads Service to link the village to the local bus stop at McDowell’s shop. Within two weeks, the lights stopped working, and when I enquired what the nature of the fault was, I was advised that thieves had stolen the underground cable. “My church, Raloo Presbyterian Church, was targeted and the lead was stripped off the hall roof. Beggs Urges Uptake of NIE and NIW Care Registers

A local Assemblyman has urged older people and people with a medical condition or disability to consider joining the NI Water and Northern Ireland Electricity Networks care registers.  The registers help to identify people who need extra help or support if there is an interruption in supply. Roy Beggs MLA, Ulster Unionist Party representative for East Antrim said ;   “With the winter weather fast approaching, it would beneficial to ensure that vulnerable residents are on the care register, in case there is an interruption in water or electricity supplies, due to adverse conditions.” People who join the NI Water Customer Care Register can get a range of free additional services if they are an older customer, have a serious medical condition or need extra help for any other reason.  They will be able to nominate a carer or relative to act on their behalf, be receiving post or by … Continue reading

Beggs presses for Departments to End Greenisland Railway Station Flooding

Roy Beggs MLA has pressed the Department of Regional Development and DARD to upgrade the Drainage system around Greenisland Railway Station so that the vital pedestrian railway underpass no longer suffers from repeated flooding. Roy Beggs MLA said, “It is unacceptable that the underpass used by the public at the busy Greenisland Railway Station has suffered a second flooding incident within approximately 2 years. This is vital local access route for rail passengers and an essential pedestrian route for many to school, to church and to local sports clubs.  ” A boulder had previous partially blockage a major culvert and had led to the earlier flooding at the station. Beggs Secures A8 Grass Cutting

Ulster Unionist Party representative Roy Beggs MLA has pressed for the cutting on the unsightly central grass reservation on the A8 Belfast Road dual carriageway approach to Larne, between Millbrook and the New Ballyrickard road Roundabout Mr Beggs said “The section of the A8 between Millbrook and the new Ballyrickard Road roundabout had been under the control of the Road Contractor and the grass in the central reservation had not been cut at all during 2015.  This created an unsightly picture for visitors to Larne.  It is now back under Transport NI control and following a complaint from a local constituent I pressed Transport NI to improve the area.  Whilst I am pleased that Transport NI have commenced cutting the unkempt central area, they still have to complete the job by cutting the areas adjacent to the Road.
