Beggs Attends UUP Policy Launch on Mental Health and Wellbeing

East Antrim Ulster Unionist representative Roy Beggs MLA has attended the Stormont launch of his Party’s policy document on Mental Health and Wellbeing.  In recent times, the UUP MLA has presented a petition on mental health and wellbeing to the Education Minister, in conjunction with Carrickfergus Grammar School pupil Sara Patterson. Mr Beggs said “I welcome the published policy paper by the UUP on mental health and wellbeing as this is an area which has been underfunded and where Northern Ireland has particular issues given the legacy of the troubles.  In addition to the legacy issues, I am also aware of ongoing issues with our young people.  Last year I worked closely with then Carrickfergus Grammar School pupil Sara Patterson to present a petition with over 600 local signatories to the Education Minister in a bid to make Mental health and Wellbeing a compulsory element of the curriculum in NI. … Continue reading

Beggs Calls for More Resources for Care in the Community

East Antrim Ulster Unionist Assemblyman Roy Beggs MLA, has called for greater resources to be provided for care in the community in order to address the pressure on hospital beds, some 133 of whom are currently blocked for more than 2 days due to complex discharges. Roy Beggs MLA asked the Minister “To detail the number of patients that are ready to be discharged from hospital but are waiting on suitable accommodation and support, broken down by Health and Social Care Trust.” In response to the question, Health Minister Simon Hamilton MLA said “My Department has set a target that 90% of complex discharges from an acute hospital are discharged within 48 hours.  A discharge is regarded as complex when it can only take place following the implementation of a significant home based or other community based service.” Mr Beggs, who served for two years on the Health Committee added … Continue reading

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) is examining the demise of the Northern Ireland Events Company (NIEC) in the wake of a damning auditors’ report that found its chief executive covered up losses with misleading and sometimes fabricated records while racking up debts of almost £1.5 million. Tributes flood in for Joan Drummond, ex-mayor of Larne

Life of service: Joan Drummond Former mayor of Larne Joan Drummond has died. A member of the Ulster Unionist Party, she served as mayor in the borough in 1997, and in 2000 received an MBE for public service. Roy Beggs snr, the former Ulster Unionist MP for East Antrim, led tributes to a woman he described as “a lovely lady”. “I deeply regret the passing of Joan Drummond,” he told the Belfast Telegraph last night. “She and her late husband Sammy gave a lifetime of service to the Craigyhill community. She served with distinction on Larne Borough Council. “A committed Ulster Unionist, she was highly respected by all sections of the community.
