Ulster Unionist MLA Beggs Welcomes Greenisland Carpark Upgrade

East Antrim Ulster Unionist Assemblyman Roy Beggs MLA has welcomed news that Transport NI have commenced resurfacing work in the Glassillan and Carrickfern Gardens area of Greenisland, following previous assurances provided to the UUP MLA by Roads Service.  Mr Beggs had previously called for the much needed resurfacing work in October 2015, due to deteriorating tarmac surfacing and trip hazards in the area. Roy Beggs MLA said, “I welcome the fact that work is currently ongoing to upgrade the Glassillan and Carrickfern roadway, footpath and carpark. The new dropped kerbing and resurfaced footpaths, together with the tarmacking of the roadway and carpark will reduce the risk of injury and enhance this important local shopping facility for the benefit of the community. A few months ago, with the trip hazards, multiple patching and the generally deteriorating tarmac surface at the Glassillan Shopping Area in Greenisland, I had requested that Transport NI … Continue reading

Call to educate eight-year-olds on legal high dangers

A local charity said this week it believes that children as young as eight should be educated on suicide awareness and the dangers of legal highs. Carlee Letson, chair of suicide prevention charity PIPS Larne, spoke out ahead of the introduction of new legal high legislation which could see offenders jailed for up to seven years. The Psychoactive Substances Act received Royal Assent two weeks ago and will be put in place from the spring. It prohibits the production, supply and importation of the drugs. Carlee (pictured) told the Times she hoped that the punishment would act as an effective deterrent against the drugs, known as psychoactive substances. “I had been hoping that this law would go through, as a lot of lives will be saved,” Carlee stated. “We are still getting five or six calls a day through to our helpline. “I have been taking classes for students at … Continue reading

Beggs welcomes new Psychoactive Substances Act

Roy Beggs, Ulster Unionist MLA, who had pressed for new legislation and the closure of shops selling dangerous Psychoactive Substances (so-called legal highs) has welcomed the news that the Psychoactive Substances Act has now received Royal Assent banning the abusive drugs throughout the UK. Roy Beggs MLA said, “Having lobbied for enhanced legislation, I am pleased that the Psychoactive Substances Act has now received Royal Assent banning the supply of these abusive drugs throughout the UK. Within the East Antrim area, these psychoactive drugs have caused death and seriously adversely effected the mental health of many who have become addicted to them.   I am aware that in Carrickfergus and Larne, some sold all their possessions and others resorted to crime to fund their addiction.” Until recently manufacturers of Psychoactive substances were able to adjust their chemical make up to dodge specific drug bans.  They were often sold under the guise … Continue reading
