Greenisland retailer: Roadworks ‘cut trade by half’

Restricted access during a period of roadworks in Greenisland has caused serious disruption for businesses, a local retailer has claimed. NI Water commenced a programme to replace water mains in the area at the end of February. It was expected that the scheme would take between six and eight weeks to complete. David McKee owns a butcher’s and coffee shop at Glassillan Court – an area he says was essentially “cut off” due to a road closure between the train station and Knockfergus Park. “The Water Board [NI Water] told us that the work would be done in four two-week periods, but in the first four weeks of the work my trade was halved,” Mr McKee told the Times. “I have a big customer catchment area in Farm Lodge and the top road, so the only way they could get to me was by doing a round trip by Trooperslane. … Continue reading

Beggs highlights access to Greenisland Businesses

Roy Beggs MLA has been contacted by local Greenisland businesses who have suffered a significant loss of trade due to traffic diversion during the upgrading of the water mains on the Station Road, Greenisland. The MLA has called on NI Water to increase the prominence of signage highlighting that access is available to local businesses on the Station Road and Glassillan Court, Greenisland. Patsy McGlone MLA re-elected chairman of NI Assembly’s All Party Group on Country Sports

The NI Assembly’s All Party Group on Country Sports has re-elected Patsy McGlone MLA (SDLP) as chairman. Mr McGlone was re-elected chairman during the group’s Annual General Meeting which was held recently at Stormont. In addition, Trevor Clarke MLA was elected vice-chair, Roy Beggs MLA was elected secretary and Jonathan Craig was elected treasurer. BASC was re-elected to provide the secretariat for the group which was established in January 2013. Speaking after the meeting, Mr McGlone said: “I am delighted to have been re-elected chair of the Assembly’s All Party Group on Country Sports.  I have a keen interest in shooting sports which contribute £28 million pounds annually to the Northern Ireland economy. Lottery funding boost for community groups in Carrickfergus

People working with young children in the Carrickfergus area are promoting positive attitudes and respect for differences with support from Big Lottery Fund. Larne / Carrickfergus and Newtownabbey Branch of Early Years has received a £9,980 grant under the Awards for All programme. It is part of a roll out of £761,601 to 86 groups across Northern Ireland. Early Years provides support to other groups working with young children in the area. The project received funding to run training to members, focusing on promoting positive attitudes and respect for differences across communities. Also boosted by the announcement is Northern Ireland Young Walkers, a walking club based in Greenisland and run by volunteers to promote improved health and build friendships. Its £4,464 grant is being used to train volunteer walk leaders.
