Call for paramilitaries to ‘leave the stage’ after hoax alert in Carrick

East Antrim MLA Roy Beggs has called for paramilitaries to “leave the stage” following a hoax alert in Carrickfergus earlier this week. The incident happened in the Castlemara Drive area of the town on Tuesday evening. Army Technical Officers examined a car at the scene; however, nothing untoward was found. “A hoax bomb warning is a criminal act and such actions disrupt family and community life,” said Mr Beggs, a member of the Justice Committee. “We all need the paramilitaries to leave the stage in order for communities to be free from the threat of violence. Beggs speaks of his shock at arrest of Larne based Marine in Somerset

East Antrim Ulster Unionist Party Assemblyman Roy Beggs MLA has outlined his shock that a Larne based Royal Marine has been arrested in Somerset in connection with Northern Ireland related terrorism. Mr Beggs, a member of the Justice Committee said “To hear that a Larne based soldier has been arrested in England with suspected links to terrorism in Northern Ireland has shocked me and I am sure that it has shocked the wider community.  It appears that a number of houses have been searched as part of the investigation and that the arrest is related to 2 major dissident republican arms dumps found in Carnfunnock and Capanagh parks.” Mr Beggs MLA continued “If there is clear evidence linking individuals to the significant arms dumps that were previously found, that must be welcomed. Ulster Unionist Party representative Roy Beggs MLA has spoken of his condemnation of a hoax bomb alert in Castlemara Drive, which was phoned through to the PSNI on Tuesday. Mr Beggs MLA , a member of the Justice Committee said “A hoax bomb warning is a criminal act and such actions disrupt family and community life.  We all need the paramilitaries to leave the stage in order for communities to be free from the threat of violence. Almost 20 years after the ceasefires, why are paramilitary groups still active? Beggs Welcomes East Antrim “Awards for All” Funding

East Antrim Ulster Unionist Party Assemblyman Roy Beggs MLA has welcomed news that 2 funding awards have been announced for the East Antrim area via the awards for all small grants programme. Mr Roy Beggs MLA said “It is welcome news for East Antrim that 2 local applications for funding have been approved, namely ‘The Dixon Park Residents Association’ & ‘Kilwaughter Village Hall Committee’. The combined award is £16,830. The grants programme aims to fund projects helping people to get involved in their communities. It also encourages people to come together to enjoy a wide range of charitable, community, educational, environmental and health-related activities.” The Dixon Park Residents Association will receive £6,830 to run activities and trips for all the community to enjoy, including a fun day, day trip to the Glens of Antrim and a Christmas lunch. Men ‘shaken’ after Carrick mugging

Detectives are appealing for witnesses following a street robbery in Carrickfergus shortly after midnight on Saturday (August 20). It was reported that two men were walking along Carnhill Place around 12.10am when they were confronted by two masked males, both of whom were carrying suspected firearms. They threatened the two men and forced them to hand over money from their wallets before making off in the direction of Oakfield Drive. The two men, one aged in his 40s and one aged in his 50s, were not injured but left “shaken” by their ordeal, said police. The incident was roundly condemned by local political representatives, including East Antrim MLA, Roy Beggs Jr. “I would urge anyone with information relating to the threatening behaviour aimed at the two victims to contact the PSNI,” Mr Beggs said.
