Beggs opposes 3 week bin collections in Borough

In relation to the story in last week’s Times Series regarding 3 week bin collections, Roy Beggs MLA said “I am aware of widespread opposition from the local community, my UUP Council colleagues and indeed myself against any suggestion that bin collections would be every 3 weeks in the Borough.  This idea does not appear to be a runner.”

Beggs Welcomes Pilot 20mph Zone at Model PS

East Antrim Ulster Unionist Party Assemblyman Roy Beggs MLA has asked the Minister for Infrastructure to outline what proposals he has to introduce 20mph zones at schools during the busy opening and closing times to reduce the risk of accidents and has welcomed the news that Model PS, Carrickfergus is to receive funding to trial a traffic management scheme incorporating a part time reduction in speed limits to 20mph. Action call on Larne’s 35 homeless families

An MLA has branded the level of homelessness in Larne “unacceptable” after it emerged the town has 35 homeless families with children. The shocking figure was revealed in response to an Assembly question by East Antrim Alliance MLA Roy Beggs. In total, 35 Larne families with children were accepted as full duty applicants (FDA) by the Housing Executive in 2015/16. This means that they met the four statutory tests of eligibility to define being homeless: homelessness, eligibility for assistance, being in priority need and being unintentionally homeless, and are indicated as “accepted” by the Housing Executive. The number of families in that situation in Larne was even higher in 2013/14, with 39 families seeking assistance, but dropped to 30 in 2014/15 before increasing again this year. In total, 4,100 homeless families with children across the Province were accepted as full duty applicants (FDA) by the Housing Executive in 2015/16. Reacting … Continue reading

UUP man: I wouldn’t be surprised if UDA faction re-armed

A claim that the South East Antrim UDA has obtained weapons from English-based crime networks is no surprise, given the group’s drug trade links. That is the view from UUP MLA Roy Beggs, who was responding to remarks made by a self-proclaimed member of a UDA faction in a BBC interview. The man’s claims – which are now being looked at by police – were aired anonymously on Monday to protect him from reprisals, said the BBC. In the interview the man talked about how the South East Antrim UDA would take a cut of profits from burglars and drug dealers in the regions it controls. He also said good-quality weapons remain in the group’s hands dating back from before the decommissioning process, and that members have also “bought some newer weapons from drug gangs in Manchester”. Members can get their hands on weapons “within 20 minutes or half an … Continue reading
