Police in Derry have said they carried out what they described as “high visibility anti-burglary” patrols in a number of areas in the city last night. A spokesperson said Strand Road Local Policing Team carried out patrols in the Ballymagoarty, Shantallow, Galliagh, Culmore and Culmore areas. The spokesperson added: “Help us keep our community safe by keeping doors and windows closed and locked. Derry is mourning the loss of one of its finest and much-loved musicians, Hugo Carlin. Hugo passed away peacefully in the Foyle Hospice on Friday night. A bass guitarist, he is best known as being a member of the Trend Showband, fronted by fellow Derry man Peter (Boy) Roddy, who enjoyed international success in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Among those who have paid tribute have been Kevin Morrison. He said “I met Hugo through the charity ‘Music at the Forum’ shows that I was involved in over the last 10 years and found him to be such a kind, decent, honest and downright top gentleman – always full of warmth and gentle encouragement for us all, always there to offer advice and guidance for all the performers.” Hugo is survived by his wife Marie and daughters, Aine and Mairead, a member Celtic Woman, the hugely popular all-female Irish … Continue reading →

A former employee of a Co. Derry Credit Union who stole £92,000 from customers has been jailed for eight months. Geraldine O’Kane, 47, of Birren Road in Dungiven pleaded guilty to fourteen counts of theft and one of false accounting. In her role as Assistant Manager at Dungiven Credit Union the defendant stole £92,000 from the accounts of eight different people over the period of February 2013 to April 2015. During that time the defendant started to take money from accounts she considered to be ‘dormant at the time’. The offences came to light when O’Kane ‘confessed to someone to she had stolen from’, after which the full extent of her criminality was uncovered. Judge Gordon Kerr QC told Derry Crown Court it was a ‘breach of trust’ and ‘very serious offending’ which ordinarily carries ‘an immediate custodial sentence’. The North’s three main teaching unions are to ballot their members on strike action. The INTO, UTU and ATL are to ask their members to vote early next month. The INTO leadership said it was seeking a mandate from its 7,000 members for a series of strikes. Members of the NASUWT union in Belfast and Newtownabbey schools are due stage a one-day strike tomorrow. In October, all five main teaching unions rejected an offer which saw their pay frozen in 2015/16 and a rise of one per cent in 2016/17. The NASUWT had previously announced its members elsewhere in Northern Ireland would stage a series of further one-day strikes in January and February next.
