Beggs comments on “The Prevalence of Autism in School Age Children in NI 2018 report

Roy Beggs MLA, Ulster Unionist Health spokesman has highlighted that the growing numbers of young people that have been diagnosed as having Special Educational Needs related to Autism, requires a response by the Department of Education as a result of the growing need for guidance and support. Roy Beggs MLA said, “There has been a steady increase in the numbers of young people with Special Education Needs related to their Autism diagnosis over the past decade with a significant increase during 2017/18. I would call on the Department of Education to ensure that there is a suitable range of guidance for schools and that accommodation can be made for pupils so that the range of pupils on the Autistic spectrum can benefit from education and be better prepared for future life.” The recently published report on “The Prevalence of Autism in School Age Children in NI 2018” has highlighted that … Continue reading

Beggs calls for Kilroot’s retention following discovery of cracks in reactor at Hunterston B nuclear power station

Following the discovery of 39 cracks in graphite bricks on reactor 3 of Hunterston B nuclear power station on the Ayrshire coast, Roy Beggs MLA has posed the question to the Utility Regulator and to SONI as to what are the implications for the security of electricity supply in Northern Ireland and has called for a rethink of the ISEM process which will result in the closure of Kilroot power station. Roy Beggs MLA said: “The discovery of cracks and the decision to cease generating from the 485MW reactor 3 at Hunterston nuclear power station could have implications for availability of power for the Moyle Interconnector during peak winter demand. The current model used by SONI assumes that a minimum of 225MW of electricity would be transmitted under the Irish Sea along the Moyle Interconnector cables, to Northern Ireland. Any such changes to SONI’s electricity availability assumptions would add further … Continue reading

Power supply fears prompt call to keep Kilroot open

Kilroot power station should be kept open because of a energy reduction at a nuclear power plant in Scotland, an MLA has said. Roy Beggs called for the retention of the Co Antrim station after it emerged that there were cracks in the reactor at Hunterston B plant in Ayrshire. Electricity generation from Hunterston B could fall by 40% this year after the cracks were discovered. A planned inspection of the graphite bricks that make up the core of Reactor 3 in March uncovered new “keyway root cracks”. Kilroot was facing closure in 2024 for environmental reasons related to its coal-burning technology, but its owner AES said earlier this year that it will in fact close at the end of this month. The closure will lead to the loss of 270 jobs. The cracks at Hunterston B were found to be developing at a slightly higher rate than anticipated, operator … Continue reading

The Belfast Trust came under criticism after failing to answer a series of questions around Dr Michael Watt.   I fear private patients like myself who were treated by consultant will be ignored  Duty of candour needed for medical profession: SDLP Complaints not raised with Sinn Fein’s O’Neill as minister   A high-level review of the work of Dr Watt, a neurology consultant, has led to the biggest ever recall of patients by the trust. Beggs seeks answers on what the Health Department knew on neurology alert and when

Beggs seeks answers on what the Health Department knew on neurology alert and when Ulster Unionist MLA Roy Beggs has demanded that the Department of Health reveal what exactly it knew and when in relation to the issue affecting over 2,500 neurology patients. The East Antrim MLA has also claimed that a Minister would have rightly been heavily reprimanded for the delays yet the Permanent Secretary Richard Pengelly has been noticeable by his silence. The Party has now tabled a series of Freedom of Information requests, including demanding copies of all internal Departmental records relating to the health alert since it was first raised at the end of 2016, a copy of all communication between the Department and the Belfast Trust, a copy of all correspondence between both the Trust and Department with the Royal College of Physicians, as well as asking for a copy of last Thursday’s final report. … Continue reading
