Worsening cancer waiting times should be enough to shame Secretary of State into taking action – Beggs

Ulster Unionist Health Spokesperson, Roy Beggs MLA, has said the revelation that there has been yet a further steep deterioration in one of the key cancer treatment times should be enough to force Karen Bradley into taking immediate action on the future of the Assembly. Roy Beggs said: “Cancer treatment targets are set because there is very sound medical evidence that the longer a patient has to wait for diagnosis or treatment, the greater the risk that they may ultimately come to harm. “It is outrageous that in December only 60.5% of patients started treatment within 62 days following an urgent referral for suspected cancer. This is far below the target of 95%. “Earlier this month the Department of Health announced that it would at long last be producing a Cancer Strategy for Northern Ireland. Yet it was also clear that the implementation of the new strategy would only be … Continue reading

Health Department using Brexit turmoil as smokescreen to reveal major stroke announcement – Beggs

The Ulster Unionist Party’s Health Spokesperson, Roy Beggs MLA, has accused the Department of Health of appearing to deliberately wait until this week to announce changes to stroke services – including the closure of several stroke units – when it knew that Brexit would be dominating the news agenda. Roy Beggs said: “It was in 2017 when the Health and Social Care Board ran an initial 13 week pre-consultation exercise. We were repeatedly told at the time the next set of firm proposals would come in 2018, but that never happened. “Instead it would appear that the Department of Health had intentionally chosen this week some time ago – when it knew that all eyes would be on Westminster for the major Brexit decisions – to reveal what would be the biggest ever shakeup to Northern Ireland’s stroke services. “That also unnecessarily forced local communities, patients and staff to wait … Continue reading

Health campaigners say stroke services shake-up ‘long overdue’

<!– –> HEALTH campaigners have welcomed as “long overdue” proposals for a radical shake-up of stroke treatment services in Northern Ireland. Stormont chiefs have suggested six models for consolidating services into between three and five larger ‘hyperacute’ units, compared to the current spread of services across 11 hospital sites. They insist the proposals, which have gone out for a 12-week public consultation, will lead to better outcomes for patients. But some politicians have expressed alarm that it would see the closure of stroke units in more rural areas. Five of the north’s eight acute care stroke units could close under the plans. Emergency stroke care could be lost at Causeway Hospital in Coleraine, South West Acute Hospital in Enniskillen, Daisy Hill in Newry, Ulster Hospital in Dundonald and Antrim Area Hospital. In all scenarios, the hyperacute units will be sited at Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast, Altnagelvin in Derry and … Continue reading

Beggs condemns ‘lawless activity’ after attacks

Ulster Unionist MLA Roy Beggs has condemned an assault in Larne’s Craigyhill estate which resulted in a broken leg and an arson attack on a car on the Coast Road, Ballygally. In a statement, Mr. Beggs said: “These two severe incidents could have been even more serious. The gang attack in Craigyhill resulted in their victim jumping from an upstairs window as he feared for his life and he sustained a broken leg. “The arson attack on a car resulted in flames spreading to the adjacent home and could easily have spread to other property. When arson occurs, it is difficult to know how far the flames will spread. “Thankfully no injuries or fatalities have been reported and the fire didn’t spread to other neighbouring property which was evacuated. “I would urge the public to co-operate with the PSNI and pass any information which may be useful on directly to … Continue reading
