Beggs welcomes reduction in chimney fires in East Antrim

Ulster Unionist Party MLA Roy Beggs has been provided details of chimney fires attended by the Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS) over the past three years in response to an Assembly question posed by the East Antrim representative to the Health Minister.

Mr Beggs MLA asked the Health Minister  “to detail the number of chimney fires attended by the Fire and rescue Service in each of the last three years.”

In the Ministerial response to Roy Beggs it is detailed that the total number of call outs in Northern Ireland have reduced from 1750 in 2013 to 1093 in 2015.

Roy Beggs MLA commented saying “It is welcome news that call outs for the NIFRS have reduced by 657 in 3 years in Northern Ireland.  The details provided to me also outline that my constituency of East Antrim has seen a reduction of 24 call outs during the same time frame from 71 in 2013 to 47 in 2015.  I was also advised by the Minister that the NIFRA provides advice on prevention at each attended incident.  This is in addition to providing detailed advice as part of Home Fire Safety Checks and running annual campaigns aimed at chimney fire prevention – the awareness week ran from 5th -9th September.  The NIFRS also provide useful advice on their website and through safety literature.”
