Beggs Questions Education Ministers Support For Officers Tackling Low Attendance

Ulster Unionist politician Roy Beggs MLA has questioned the Education Minister on the pressing need for Education Welfare Officers to have access to the computerised C2K attendance records, in order to better monitor pupil attendance rates in real time and to allow them to work more proactively. East Antrim MLA Roy Beggs said “Educational attendance is extremely important, and clearly links to a young person’s personal and academic development.  Why has the Minister, after over 3 years in office, not fully recognised the importance of the Education and Welfare Service in assisting to improve attendance?  Why as of yet have Education Welfare Officers not been given the appropriate tools to do their jobs, by providing them with access to the C2K systems at their offices.” At present, Education Welfare Officers only have access to schools C2K information on attendance when they are in each school on a site visit. “School … Continue reading

Changes to School Funding Formula Miss Target-Beggs

Ulster Unionist Party MLA Roy Beggs Jnr has urged schools in his East Antrim constituency to respond to the Department of Education’s proposal to change the way schools are funded through the Common Funding Formula. The Department of Education is currently consulting on proposed changes to how they calculate annual school budgets. Mr Beggs said: “The consultation period for the proposed changes to funding for schools ends this Friday, and I would encourage all Schools to respond. The negative impact which these projected changes would have on most local school budgets is of real concern. The vast majority would see their budgets cut dramatically, in many cases losing between £5,000-£10,000. Some schools are losing even more. The Ulster Unionist my Party fully recognises that a new funding model may be necessary in order to tackle the correlation between poor educational attainment and social deprivation. However, we believe that the current … Continue reading

Beggs welcomes new Children’s Hospital

Ulster Unionist Health spokesperson Roy Beggs has welcomed the news that funding has been allocated to build a new Children’s Hospital at the site of the Royal Victoria Hospital, but stated his regret that the money could not have been found earlier by the Finance Minister when Michael McGimpsey was Health Minister. Mr Beggs said; “A new Children’s Hospital is badly needed and the entire community will obviously welcome news that the money has been found. In the last Assembly the Ulster Unionist Health Minister Michael McGimpsey continually lobbied for funding for a new Children’s Hospital. I can recall that in February 2011 McGimpsey asked for more money only for the First Minister to react by describing such requests as “obscene”. Fortunately that attitude has moderated now that a DUP Minister is in charge of Health and in an answer received by my Party Leader Mike Nesbitt less than two … Continue reading

It is important that we put in place safeguarding and protection strategies that will cover all our young children; it is not just about the children in care. Yes, we need to have a particular focus on them, … Continue reading

New Extension Opened at Glynn Primary School

Local Ulster Unionist Party MLA Roy Beggs Jnr has hailed the opening of the new extension at Glynn Primary School. Officially opened on Friday afternoon by Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant for Co Antrim, Joan Christie, the new extension replaces the 2nd hand temporary mobile classroom which had been in situ for several generations. “I myself was educated in P3 and P4 in the old mobile which has just gone,” said Roy Beggs. “Whilst it served its purpose well, it is great to see Glynn Primary School with modern buildings and looking to the future. The next generation of pupils in the village and district will really benefit from the excellent new facilities. Well done to all the staff, and parents who actively support the school and have seen it grow in popularity in recent years.” ENDS
