Lavish Communion outfits cheapen a sacred occasion

It is impossible to disagree with the priest who says that some parents have lost the run of themselves when it comes to spending on their children’s First Communion outfits and celebrations.

The extravagance is certainly parent-driven, because the church has constantly sought out ways of taking the emphasis off elaborate and expensive dresses and restoring it to where it belongs – on a sacred occasion.

Can it be true that some people will spend thousands of pounds on dresses for their little girls, making Communion as expensive as a wedding?

It is right that children realise the occasion is special, but for a religious reason, not because of a lavish party.
