Men ‘shaken’ after Carrick mugging

Detectives are appealing for witnesses following a street robbery in Carrickfergus shortly after midnight on Saturday (August 20).

It was reported that two men were walking along Carnhill Place around 12.10am when they were confronted by two masked males, both of whom were carrying suspected firearms.

They threatened the two men and forced them to hand over money from their wallets before making off in the direction of Oakfield Drive.

The two men, one aged in his 40s and one aged in his 50s, were not injured but left “shaken” by their ordeal, said police.

The incident was roundly condemned by local political representatives, including East Antrim MLA, Roy Beggs Jr. “I would urge anyone with information relating to the threatening behaviour aimed at the two victims to contact the PSNI,” Mr Beggs said.

Fellow East Antrim Assembly member Oliver McMullan said the reports of the mugging were “very disturbing.”

Echoing calls for anyone with information to contact the police, he added: “It must have been a terrifying experience for those involved.”

Meanwhile, Detective Constable Sweeney from Larne Reactive and Organised Crime Branch has appealed for anyone who may have witnessed the incident or anyone with any information that can assist with the investigation to contact Detectives at Larne Police Station on 101, quoting reference number 42 of 21/08/16.

Alternatively, if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.
