East Antrim MLA Roy Beggs has welcomed news that Roads Service has agreed to add the North Road to a pool of schemes for inclusion in its resurfacing programme.
The Ulster Unionist representative said: “I contacted Roads Service on March 21 to outline my concern at the condition of the North Road, highlighting in particular the busy section of road that links the Marshallstown Road and town centre. This section of road has many manholes which appear to be recessed below the level of the road and there has also been numerous excavations by various utility companies which has left a very poor quality of road surface.”
In his letter to Roads Service, Mr Beggs said the area was ‘one of the busiest sections of road in Carrickfergus linking the Marshallstown Road and the town centre’. He added: “In addition, it is the main road servicing Carrickfergus College and Carrickfergus Grammar and as a result has high levels of traffic.
“I would request that the Roads Service should be upgrading the surface of this busy road because of its poor condition and because of its importance as a key spine route within the Carrickfergus area.”
Responding, Roads Service indicated that the North Road from Marshallstown Road to Prince Andrew Way would benefit from resurfacing.
“Potential resurfacing schemes must compete on a priority basis for inclusion in our annual resurfacing programme. I can confirm that North Road has been added to a pool of schemes for inclusion in our resurfacing programme as / when resources permit,” a DRD spokesperson said.
