A GROUP of pupils from Newtownabbey Community High School (NCHS) recently visited the Northern Ireland Assembly at Stormont where they took part in a question and answer session with MLAs.

The visit was organised as part of Rathcoole Friends of the Somme’s Community Leadership Programme, funded by the International Fund for Ireland.

Delivered by the Greater Whitewell Surgery in partnership with the Community Support and Development Partnership (CSDP), the NEELB Area Youth Service and Rathcoole Friends of the Somme, the project has involved dozens of NCHS pupils who have engaged in the Flags, Parades and Emblems course in a bid to address issues surrounding sectarianism.

During their visit to Parliament Buildings last month, the young people from the school’s Student Council asked questions and raised issues with MLAs Paula Bradley (DUP), Roy Beggs (UUP) and Cathal Ó hOisín (Sinn Fein). The students enjoyed a tour around the historic building followed by a presentation about the history of Stormont.
