Schrader Electronics: 42 temporary employees to be let go

November 11 2015

Forty-two temporary employees are to be let go from the Carrickfergus plant of US firm Schrader Electronics.

The company which makes tyre pressure gauges and is part of Sensata Technologies said the jobs will be let go before the end of the year.

In a statement Sensata Technologies said: “Towards the latter end of 2014 and the beginning of 2015, the company increased its workforce temporarily to meet an increase in global vehicle and Aftermarket growth.

“As demand has now stabilised, the company has been undertaking a phased return to its standard, three-shift, five days a week manufacturing pattern.”

UUP MLA Roy Beggs said the news was “devastating”.

He said: “It is disappointing to learn of the loss of 42 manufacturing positions in Carrickfergus.  The announcement of further job losses as we approach the Christmas period will be devastating to the workers and families concerned.

“Last week we had the announcement of the loss of 860 jobs at Michelin in Ballymena.  I know that many Michelin workers live in Carrickfergus, Larne and Newtownabbey.  Manufacturing jobs are vital to any economy.

“This further loss of manufacturing jobs in County Antrim must give us all cause for concern.”

East Antrim MLA Stewart Dickson said the announcement will cause “distress” locally.

Mr Dickson said: “It is particularly distressing, given this announcement comes the same day Northern Ireland’s unemployment rate was announced as having fallen.

“We must do what we can to lessen the impact on the affected employees and I will be discussing the issue with my colleague, Employment and Learning Minister Stephen Farry, to help do just that.”

“The Northern Ireland Executive must meet the needs of local industry so that vital manufacturing jobs are maintained and employees can continue to support themselves and their families.”
