Alliance representative Stewart Dickson is celebrating after being elected on the sixth stage of the count for East Antrim.

Mr Dickson said that the Alliance party had increased its vote in the region by 25 per cent since last May.

“It’s not only a personal endorsement, it’s an endorsement of the incredible leadership of Naomi Long,” he said.

Meanwhile, the UUP’s Roy Beggs, who was also elected on the sixth stage of the East Antrim count, said his party’s vote in the constituency was up by 2.5 per cent.

He said the two largest parties had “contributed to political instability” in Northern Ireland and that there was a “frustration” with them on the part of the electorate.
