Ulster Unionists welcome £5million Caterpillar Larne investment

Ulster Unionist Economy spokesperson Sandra Overend MLA has welcomed the announced £5million investment in new operations at the Caterpillar factory in Larne.

Mrs Overend said:

“This is the second very positive announcement that Caterpillar are diversifying their local operations and keeping skilled local jobs in recent times.   The new operation to produce articulated truck axles in Larne expands Northern Ireland’s manufacturing base, and proves again that we are still on the world map when it comes to engineering.  It is encouraging news especially in the context of figures showing that the Northern Ireland economy grew by 1.6% between July and September 2013.”

Ulster Unionist Party MLA for East Antrim Roy Beggs added:

“700 jobs went at FG Wilsons in 2012 following the relocation of a major part of their generator manufacturing business to the Far East 18 months ago. Therefore the news that the company – now rebadged under the Caterpillar banner – is developing new lines which is securing the jobs that have remained in the Larne facility is very encouraging.  It is to be hoped that additional employment will result from this investment.  The company deserves credit for continuing to have faith in the adaptability of the skilled local workforce.”
