Beggs helps NHS celebrate 65th Birthday

Speaking on the 65th Birthday of the NHS, Ulster Unionist Party Health Spokesperson, Roy Beggs MLA paid tribute to the continuing success of the NHS in providing free healthcare to everyone in the United Kingdom. Speaking at an event at Stormont to celebrate the Birthday, Roy said; “I was reminded again today of how proud we should be of the NHS. It is fitting that the community takes time to fully appreciate the free health service that the 1.3 million people employed by the NHS provide to them around the clock, every day of the year. “The provision of free healthcare is not something that we should take for granted. Indeed, for citizens as close to us as in the Republic of Ireland, free healthcare is only available to a very few individuals, who for example earn less than £155 per week. “A visit to a GP in the Republic … Continue reading

Need to Raise Awareness of Endometriosis

Roy has spoken in an Assembly debate on Endometriosis, a common condition in which small pieces of the womb lining (the endometrium) are found outside the womb. “That this Assembly calls on the Minister of Health, Social Services and Public Safety to initiate and expedite an inquiry into the urgent need for an integrated endometriosis service to address the severe suffering experienced by women with this condition across Northern Ireland.”  Mr Beggs: I, too, support the motion. Endometriosis affects thousands of women in Northern Ireland and hundreds of thousands of women in the United Kingdom. In a recent Assembly answer to a question from the Chair of the Committee, the Health Minister indicated that some 1,155 hospital admissions in Northern Ireland in 2011-12 were as a result of diagnosis of endometriosis. The lack of awareness of the condition is of particular concern, and that is why I welcome this debate. … Continue reading

Beggs hits out at latest “shocking” A&E Waiting Time statistics

Beggs hits out at latest “shocking” A&E Waiting Time statistics The Ulster Unionist Party’s Health spokesperson Roy Beggs MLA has described the latest statistics to be released (for April) regarding Accident & Emergency waiting time statistics as “truly shocking”. Mr Beggs said: “According to Provisional Emergency Care Waiting Time Information for April 2013, the percentage of patients being seen within four hours at A&E departments were 62.8% at Antrim Area, 61.6% at Craigavon Area, 61.3% at the Ulster Hospital and 59.5% at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast. These are truly shocking statistics. Only last week the BBC reported how the NHS in England and Wales was deemed to be in crisis due to the number of hospitals whose A&E departments were failing to meet the 95% target for seeing patients within four hours. To put things in perspective, the statistics for last month show that in Northern Ireland only … Continue reading

Beggs supports calls for Executive to do more to combat suicide

Ulster Unionist Party Health Spokesperson Roy Beggs MLA has given his support to an Assembly motion calling on the Executive to do more to tackle the rising number of suicides in Northern Ireland. The East Antrim representative said: “With recorded suicide rates in NI more than doubling in the past 30 years, increasing from 7.7 in 1980 to 17.4 per 100,000 in 2010, it is clear that in the modern society, we face a huge challenge to bring about a reduction in the apparently ever increasing number of suicides. There has been a significant increase in the numbers of suicides occurring since 2003. I notice according to Mike Tomlinson, that this is against a back drop of lower and generally slowly declining levels in England, Scotland and even the most deprived English region, the North East. There has been a particular increase in male suicides since 2003. Statistics show that … Continue reading
