Sinn Fein cannot pick and choose when the law applies – Beggs

The Ulster Unionist Party’s East Antrim MLA Roy Beggs has called for the Police and the Public Prosecution Service to ensure that Gerry Kelly is subjected to the same rigours of the law as he sought for all other citizens when he obstructed a police land rover in a dangerous situation. Roy Beggs said, “What would happen if you or I obstructed the passage of a police vehicle? What would happen if a flag protestor obstructed the passage of a police vehicle? Earlier this year Gerry Kelly was reported as saying that the Chief Constable Matt Baggott had “lost the plot”. (see note1 below). Gerry Kelly lost the plot when he obstructed the passage of a police vehicle and he should be subject to the full rigours of the law”. (see note 2 below) “There is a particular requirement for community representatives to act responsibly in tense situations where riot … Continue reading

More Criminal Damage at Electricity Sub Stations

Roy Beggs MLA has called for support from the public to help police identify those who caused the criminal damage at the Joymount Electrical Substation in Carrickfergus on Friday night. The Ulster Unionist MLA said “The deliberate damage caused to the electrical supply resulted in the loss of power to thousands of homes within the Carrickfergus Area. Whilst the loss of lighting is inconvenient and causes unnecessary risks, the loss of electrical power also results in central heating systems being unable to operate. This has resulted in vulnerable individuals -the old and the young coming more susceptible to cold weather. Those who deliberately damaged this property have not only risked their own lives but the lives of others. They have also caused significant unnecessary cost to electricity users in terms of the emergency actions that had to be carried out and the subsequent repairs. All of this will ultimately have … Continue reading

National Crime Agency Must Come to Northern Ireland: Beggs

East Antrim MLA Roy Beggs Jnr has accused Nationalist parties of playing politics with security and crime fighting in their attempts to local the extension of the National Crime Agency into Northern Ireland. The NCA is replacing the Serious Organised Crime Agency (Soca), incorporating the work of the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (Ceop). It will also house the national cyber crime unit and also cover border policing and economic crime throughout the UK. Sinn Fein and the SDLP combined to employ a procedural device to block an Ulster Unionist motion to establish the National Criminal Agency in Northern Ireland. Speaking during the debate at Stormont Roy Beggs MLA said: “Criminals are highly organised in their dealings, should it be drugs, prostitution, people trafficking, money laundering or fraud, and they deal with huge sums of money. We, as a community, must ensure that we fight effectively against that, whether … Continue reading

Beggs Calls for Calm after Carrickfergus Street Violence

Roy Beggs MLA has echoed the view of his Party Leader, Mike Nesbitt that recent street violence is damaging the community and the image of Northern Ireland, and that politics must be seen to work rather than violence on our streets. Roy Beggs said, “What would the Queen or the Baron of Carrickfergus make of the recent violence on our streets? I would urge everyone to give dialogue and politics a chance. The Unionist Forum allows for all unionists to engage and for issues of concern to be taken forward and worked on at a political level. It is clear that when protest is brought onto our streets at this time, things can easily get out of control and violence can erupt. Police Officers, protestors or ordinary citizens could easily be injured and young people could end up with a criminal record, reducing their future prospects. The violence has also adversely affecting … Continue reading

False Stories Spread on Social Media Heightening Community Tensions.

Local UUP MLA Roy Beggs has highlighted the inaccurateand provocative nature of an online media report on the ‘Belfast Daily’ Website, which is heightening community tensions. The news website falsely claimed that 200 Garda officers were being drafted in to bolster PSNI numbers in riot situations. http://www.belfastdaily.co.uk/2013/01/06/revealed-psni-hire-200-garda-officers-to-put-down-loyalist-rebellion/ The East Antrim MLA explained: “My office and indeed other offices belonging to Ulster Unionist Party colleagues have been contacted by people very concerned at reports published online stating that the PSNI had drafted in the Garda riot squad, under what is a deliberately provocative headline. Completely unnamed ‘security sources’ are quoted as the basis of this ‘story’ which has been spread on social media. My party colleague Ross Hussey who is a member of the Policing Board, has raised this issue with the PSNI and has been told emphatically that this report is completely false and has no basis in fact. I … Continue reading
