Beggs comments on latest unemployment figures

Ulster Unionist Party MLA Roy Beggs Jnr has commented on the latest unemployment figures which have just been released. They show that over the latest twelve month period there were a total of 4,311 proposed redundancies, an increase of 86% from the previous year (2,315). Currently there are 1,839 outstanding redundancies (that is, proposed but not confirmed), which is 141% higher than this time last year (762). East Antrim MLA Mr Beggs said: “For the month of October, more people (85) were made redundant in East Antrim that in any other constituency in Northern Ireland. This is undoubtedly related to the job losses at FG Wilsons. http://www.detini.gov.uk/deti-stats-index/stats-surveys/stats-redundancies.htm It is a sobering thought that as bad as the current figures are, they are likely to get worse with the additional impact of Pattons going into administration and the knock on effect on local employees and subcontractors. Last week I met sub-contractors … Continue reading

Beggs Takes Up Health Spokesman’s Role

Ulster Unionist MLA Roy Beggs has said he is “relishing the challenge” of taking up the position of the Ulster Unionist Party’s Health spokesperson. The East Antrim Assembly Member said: “I am looking forward to joining the Committee for Health Social Services & Public Safety and taking up the role as the Ulster Unionist Party’s Health spokesman. The health portfolio is one of the most important as the services touch so many lives directly. I am in no doubt that I have a big challenge ahead of me; but it is one that I am looking forward to.’ “There are a number of issues I will be focusing on; particularly those areas that are currently under review under the Transforming Your Care Consultation such as primary care, mental health services, statutory residential homes, prevention, early intervention and integrated care. But from an East Antrim perspective there are an number of … Continue reading

Roy Speaks on Used Tyre Disposal Report at Assembly

Speaking on Tyre Disposal ReportThat this Assembly approves the interim report of the Committee for the Environment on its inquiry into the management of used tyres in Northern Ireland and calls on the Minister of the Environment to bring forward a timetable for implementing the recommendations contained in the report. Mr Beggs: As a former member of the Environment Committee, I remember coming across this issue a long time ago. I recognised at that time the potential for profiteering that could easily happen, it struck me, through the mishandling of the storage of tyres being recycled — or not recycled. I welcome the report that the Committee has made and the conclusions it has come to. The issue of ensuring that all sites are licensed is important. The public needs to be wary where illegal, unlicensed sites are used. There is a need to inspect licensed sites to ensure that … Continue reading

Pastic Bag Tax debated at Assembly

Roy Contributes to Plastic Bag Tax debate Ulster Unionist MLAs have successfully carried an amendment regarding the proposed tax on single use carrier bags. Speaking during the Stormont debate, East Antrim MLA Roy Beggs Jnr said: “It is important that we focus on the environmental aspect of the purpose behind the levy. Originally, there was talk about a green new deal but that has gone by the wayside. No funding from this issue will go towards the green new deal as there is no proposal for a green new deal at present. In any case, I am concerned about the economics and the figures that are coming out. The administrative costs will be £820,000 a year. Surely, we must look at that very carefully to see how we can better manage such a proposal so that we are not simply raising money for more bureaucratic systems. Also, on the issue … Continue reading
