Beggs welcomes ban on smoking in cars carrying children coming into effect

East Antrim UUP MLA Roy Beggs said: “Today sees us take an important step in protecting the health of children. The ban on smoking in cars carrying children – which came into effect yesterday (1st February 2022) – will safeguard them from the damaging effects of second-hand smoke. We know the dangers of second-hand smoke and the role it plays in conditions like asthma so I am pleased that this ban has come into force. “This is exactly the type of proactive preventative measures that are needed to create a healthier society. I am glad to see such policies being implemented under Robin Swann’s leadership of the Department of Health. The knock-on effect of this policy will be lessening the normalisation of smoking around children which we hope will see fewer young people in turn taking up smoking themselves.” Ends

Beggs welcomes 3 new East Antrim additions to 20mph part time speed limits at schools

East Antrim UUP MLA Roy Beggs said “It is welcome news that Glynn, St Nicholas’ and Eden Primary Schools are part of the recently launched consultation for additional 20mph part time speed limits as schools. These schools will hopefully join with Upper Ballyboley, Islandmagee & Model PS in addition to Carrickfergus Academy and Carrickfergus Grammar School, where the 20mph zones are already operational. Last March I wrote to the Infrastructure Minister to ask that a number of additional schools be added to the scheme. Three are included this time, however a number are still waiting inclusion for the scheme. The other schools that I asked the Minister to consider including where Toreagh PS, Carnlough Integrated, Linn PS, Olderfleet PS, St Macnissi’s PS, Seaview PS, Glynn PS, Larne High School, Larne Grammar School, Roddensvale, Thornfield & Rostulla. I would ask that each of these schools be considered for the next tranche … Continue reading

Beggs welcomes belated legislation to exclude NI drivers from £50 additional motor insurance costs

East Antrim Assemblyman Roy Beggs MLA, a member of the Infrastructure Committee at Stormont has welcomed a Ministerial update that legislation is being introduced to exclude Northern Ireland drivers from the additional motor insurance cost implications arising from the Vnuk case – expected to average at £50 per year. Speaking at the Infrastructure Committee, Roy Beggs MLA said: “This has been an issue of concern since I tabled questions to the Minister last February. I am pleased that, finally, we are moving forward with it, because there is a huge cost implication for every vehicle owner in Northern Ireland — a £50 a year increase in insurance costs — if we do nothing. There seems to be clear support for the Bill. Accelerated passage is not a good way in which to introduce legislation, so, rather than have us invent something new that may be problematic, will our Bill mirror … Continue reading

UUP MLA Roy Beggs calls for CCTV at Marine Gardens Play Park

East Antrim Ulster Unionist Party Assemblyman Roy Beggs MLA has called for the installation of CCTV at the Marine Gardens play park in Carrickfergus following repeated vandalism at the site. Roy Beggs MLA said “Unfortunately the Marine Gardens play park was vandalised again over the weekend. I do not understand why anyone would set out to damage a children’s play area and I would urge anyone with any information on this crime to contact the PSNI. A direct consequence of these irresponsible actions is that the play park will be inaccessible for young people to enjoy while repairs are carried out. It is time for CCTV to be installed in the local area to monitor & record out of hours activity and try to lessen the likelihood of subsequent destruction. Such a move would help to protect the significant Council investment in the play park and the surrounding area. I … Continue reading
