Roy Issues Safety Plea over Jet Skis

Local Ulster Unionist MLA Roy Beggs has issued a plea for Jet skiers to act responsibly at Browns’ Bay and other recreational beaches in East Antrim. He said: “It is great to see that our superb beaches have attracted so many people- locals and tourists alike in the first- and hopefully not the last- spell of fine summer weather. However I am concerned at reports that the Coast guard had to be called to Browns’ Bay at the weekend to respond to complaints about dangers to beach users caused by some jet skiers.” To ensure the safety of users Larne Borough Council has signs restricting the speed of pleasure boats and jet skis to a maximum speed of 8 knots within the positioned marker buoys at Ballygally and Browns Bay. Roy Beggs MLA added: “I am by no means anti-jet skiing but it should be properly regulated so that our … Continue reading

Need for Two Separate Schools for Islandmagee and Ballycarry Highlighted

Ulster Unionist MLA for East Antrim Roy Beggs Jnr has written to Minister for Education pointing out an historic underspend on new school buildings in East Antrim, and the continuing need for separate primary schools in Islandmagee and Ballycarry. In his correspondence the UUP MLA states: “Since 1999, my constituency has been very badly neglected at primary school level in terms of new/ replacement school buildings, with only 1 project built (St MacNissis Maintained Primary School, Larne) at a cost of £1.21M. This contrasts very unfavourably with the neighbouring constituency of North Antrim which has had 11 new build Primary Schools at a cost of £24.85M (AQW19810/11-15). The spend in East Antrim has been the lowest in the whole of Northern Ireland.” Mr Beggs said healthy birthrate in both the Ballycarry ward and Islandmagee wards support the case that two schools are sustainable in the area. “The figures for live … Continue reading

Need for Community Benefit for Larne Lough Gas Storage Project

Ulster Unionist MLA Roy Beggs Jnr has commented on news that the DoE Has awarded planning permission for the construction of gas storage in salt caverns under Larne Lough at Islandmagee. The East Antrim MLA said: “It was always likely that one of the several underground gas storage projects which have been proposed in the East Antrim area would be given the green light to go ahead. It appears to me that a decision has been made some time ago, at a high strategic level, that Northern Ireland needs natural gas storage facilities. I understand that the test bore holes recently drilled at Ballyvallagh, above Glenoe showed that the storage of gas there was not geologically feasible, so the Islandmagee project became much more likely to be approved. I would have concerns that no full boreholes have yet been drilled and tested by the Islandmagee/Portland gas company, so there is … Continue reading

Investigation into Millbay Sewage Flooding Complete

Ulster Unionist MLA for East Antrim Roy Beggs Jnr has said progress has been made in finding a solution to the problems with the newly installed mains sewerage system at Millbay, Islandmagee. The local representative was speaking after a presentation was made to local residents and Environmental Health Officers by consultants URS who have just concluded a 9 month investigation on behalf of Northern Ireland Water. Mr Beggs said: “Problems with flooding and pollution from domestic sewage predate the installation of first time mains sewerage at Millbay over 5 years ago. However it has been a source of immense frustration to local people that there has been a catalogue of issues with the new system and the Sewage Pumping Station which pumps the Millbay sewage up to Mulloughbuoy for secondary treatment and coastal discharge. It was really only last summer after concerted lobbying and a meeting organised by my office … Continue reading
