Roy Raises Meat Traceability issue at Health Committee

Ulster Unionist MLA for East Antrim Roy Beggs has said that the best way to ensure food safety is to buy from a trusted local butcher.  During an evidence gathering session by the Stormont Health Committee, Roy questioned Maria Jennings of the  Food Standards Agency (FSA) on the proposed food hygiene rating scheme legislation: Mr Beggs: It was touched on earlier that Northern Ireland has a very high level of traceability, perhaps the highest in the world.  However, rogue traders and processors, whether in Europe or elsewhere, have put a bit of doubt in some minds at a cost to legitimate businesses.  Do you agree that one of the ways of reducing risk factors is to keep the food chain as short as possible and that, to a degree, that means buying from a trusted local butcher? Ms Jennings: Mr Beggs, we have to look at the whole global food … Continue reading

A&E Waiting Times Not Acceptable: Beggs

Ulster Unionist Health spokesperson, Roy Beggs MLA has slammed the Health Minister Edwin Poots after it emerged that in the last three months the proportion of people being treated in A&E within the four hour target has fallen by a further 5%, from an already low base. Roy said: “It is damning that the proportion of people being treated, discharged or admitted in Northern Ireland’s A&E units within four hours of their arrival has dropped by 5% from 76.8% to 71.7 between October and December 2012.  When you compare this to NHS hospitals in Scotland, where the figures for September 2012 show that 95% of patients in A&E were seen within 4 hours, it is even more staggering.  Given that ensuring treatment times are within four hours is a priority for our health service, the Minister must answer as to why this has taken a further dip from levels that … Continue reading

Ulster Unionist Health spokesperson, Roy Beggs MLA has called on the Health Minister to bring forward legislation to ban smoking in cars carrying children after it was revealed that levels of childhood asthma in the UK have fallen since the introduction of the smoking ban in enclosed public spaces. The East Antrim MLA said: “It is very encouraging to learn that there has been a significant drop in the amount of children being admitted to hospital because of their asthma since the ban on smoking in enclosed public spaces came into effect.” “The evidence is indisputable; young people are particularly vulnerable to exposure of second hand smoke, much more so than adults. Children’s bodies are still developing, and exposure to the poisons at this stage puts them at risk of severe respiratory diseases. Exposure is also known to cause asthma, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), bronchitis, pneumonia, middle ear infection … Continue reading

Beggs Takes Up Health Spokesman’s Role

Ulster Unionist MLA Roy Beggs has said he is “relishing the challenge” of taking up the position of the Ulster Unionist Party’s Health spokesperson. The East Antrim Assembly Member said: “I am looking forward to joining the Committee for Health Social Services & Public Safety and taking up the role as the Ulster Unionist Party’s Health spokesman. The health portfolio is one of the most important as the services touch so many lives directly. I am in no doubt that I have a big challenge ahead of me; but it is one that I am looking forward to.’ “There are a number of issues I will be focusing on; particularly those areas that are currently under review under the Transforming Your Care Consultation such as primary care, mental health services, statutory residential homes, prevention, early intervention and integrated care. But from an East Antrim perspective there are an number of … Continue reading

Why the DUP U turn on NHS Trust Residential Homes Closures?

East Antrim Ulster Unionist MLA Roy Beggs has stated that the Health Minister’s statement to the Assembly on ‘Transforming Your Care’ has generated more questions than answers. Mrs Beggs said;” Just like last week when I raised questions during a debate about Health and Social Care in my East Antrim constituency, Minister Poots has been less than explicit in his answers about the implication of the Transforming Your Care (Compton) Report.  He does not seem to have answers to the specific concerns I have raised about early discharge from hospital, and Trust residential homes which can be vital in providing rehabilitations service prior to patients being discharged safely back to their homes. Questioning Minister Poots on the proposal to phase out statutory residential care homes, Mr Beggs said: “From family experience, I am aware of two elderly people who were returned to their homes following hospital treatment with very limited … Continue reading
