Beggs Welcomes Start of A2 Road Widening Scheme

Ulster Unionist MLA for East Antrim, Roy Beggs, has welcomed the long awaited start of works on the A2 road widening scheme at Greenisland. The MLA attended the official sod cutting event with DRD Minister Danny Kennedy and local UUP Councillors Beryl McKnight and Andrew Wilson. Roy Beggs MLA said “The need for the A2 widening at Greenisland has been apparent for decades. Having highlighted the issue during the Belfast Metropolitan Area Planning process, I was pleased that the bottleneck was recognised as one of the top 5 priorities within the entire greater Belfast area. “Whilst on the DRD Committee I highlighted to other members the fact that the average speed on the A2 at peak periods, is under 10 mph and one of the most congested roads in Northern Ireland. Red Letter Day as Contractor is appointed for A2 Roadworks

East Antrim Ulster Unionist Party MLA Roy Beggs Jnr, who for many years had been lobbying for the A2 Greenisland up-grade, has welcomed the award of the contract for the A2 Road improvement scheme. Mr Beggs said, “This is a red letter day for the residents, businesses and commuters from Carrickfergus and surrounding area who have suffered significant traffic congestion and delays for decades. With the appointment of a main contractor, the much needed and long awaited work to uncork the Greenisland A2 traffic bottleneck is ready to go. It can be expected that with all the statutory processes completed, work will begin in a few months after the contractor sets up his site yard. Progress on Government Plan to tackle Mobile Phone Blackspots on Coast Road

East Antrim UUP MLA Roy Beggs has welcomed clarification from the Minister for Culture, Communication & Creative Industries regarding the implications of the Chancellor of the Exchequer budget statement regarding improving mobile coverage along the A2 Coast Road. Roy Beggs MLA said ‘I welcome confirmation from Ed Vaizey MP Minister for Culture, Communication & Creative Industries that the Antrim Coast Road which forms part of the A2 will receive central government investment to upgrade mobile coverage to eliminate as many black spots as possible. Tourism becoming increasingly important and more and more visitors are utilizing smart phone technology and even locally developed apps to enhance the visitor’s experience. This investment in the A2 will enhance the tourism product and hopefully assist in encouraging more visitor nights and money spent in local restaurants and other local facilities.
