Beggs welcomes East Antrim Roads Investment.

Ulster Unionist MLA Roy Beggs has welcomed the confirmation of Stormont government funding to widen the A2 at the Greenisland bottleneck, and to complete the dualling of the vital A8 Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) route between Larne and Belfast. Roy Beggs MLA said, “I am delighted that funding has finally been made available by the Executive and that an Ulster Unionist Roads Minister, Danny Kennedy has prioritised the road widening scheme at Greenisland.  Only one year ago, with the 2011 budget approved by the DUP and Sinn Fein, the prospects for the A2 widening appeared bleak.   It was a scandal that after all the years of preparation the funding was removed from the budget. Thank fully, an Ulster Unionist Minister, has now given the A2 the go ahead. Commuters and businesses have suffered severe traffic delays on the A2 for too long.  I am also pleased also that the finance … Continue reading

Shop worker stabbed in a ‘cowardly’ robbery bid

Published on Monday 13 February 2012 00:23 A MAN who stabbed a Larne shop worker during an attempted armed robbery at the weekend has been branded a cowardly thug by a local community representative. The culprit – described as being slim, wearing a red, hooded top, jeans and white trainers – entered Wilsons convenience store at St Johns Place in the town at about 5.50pm on Sunday and demanded money from the female member of staff, before attacking her with a knife. He then escaped empty-handed in the direction of Ronald Street. The victim, who was the only employee on duty in the shop at the time of the attack, was taken to hospital for treatment, but her injuries were not life-threatening. Ann Marshall, chairwoman of the Dixon Park Residents Association, strongly condemned the attack and hoped the attacker would be swiftly brought to justice. It is awful when people … Continue reading

Beggs calls for community to give any information on violent criminal to PSNI

Roy Beggs MLA has expressed his abhorrence at the news of a woman shop assistant having been stabbed during an attempted robbery of the shop at St John’s Place, Larne. Roy Beggs, Ulster Unionist MLA said, “I would ask the local community to give any information they might have to the police of this assailant who was willing to use his knife on a defenceless woman.   This man is a danger to the local community and the sooner he is off the streets and his weapon is confiscated the better.   Given the description given, I have no doubt that someone will know who it was and should give information to the PSNI.   Someone may even feel personally threated by him.  If so, I would suggest that the anonymous Crimestoppers telephone number 0800 555 111  could be used assist police identify him. Local shops provide an important service to local communities … Continue reading

Beggs highlights the need for pre-action legal protocol to minimise car insurance costs

East Antrim MLA Roy Beggs has welcomed an indication from the Justice Minister that he will implement a pre-action protocol to improve the efficiency of the legal system with regard to personal injury claims and which have been driving up the cost of car insurance in Northern Ireland. The Ulster Unionist MLA was speaking following reports by the Assembly public accounts committee and the Office of Fair trading. Mr Beggs said; “It is clear that urgent action is required to regulate personal injury legal procedures and costs. All drivers bear the excessive legal costs in their annual insurance premiums. Some car owners are so adversely affected by the higher cost that they can no longer afford insurance or to keep a car legally on the road. As a parent of 3 younger drivers, I know only too well the prohibitive cost of insurance.” “I welcome the indication by the Minister … Continue reading

Beggs calls for end of drift and bag nets to protect dwindling wild salmon

East Antrim MLA Roy Beggs Jnr has raised the issue of salmon conservation at Stormont. He has asked the Minister responsible about the practice of issuing licences for drift/bag nets in coastal waters which is widely blamed for causing the dwindling numbers of salmon able to return to their native rivers to spawn new generations of fish. Roy Beggs commented: “The issue of conservation of fishing stocks – particularly salmon is one which local angling groups have been pushing with vigour in recent times, in light of dwindling numbers in our streams and rivers. I was pleased to attend a recent information event at Stormont organised by my Ulster Unionist Party colleague Robin Swann MLA. One of the major issues raised at the event by angler groups was the continued use of bag nets in coastal waters- a practice supposedly banned by the UN and European Union Directives. From questions … Continue reading
