Beggs Takes Up Health Spokesman’s Role

Ulster Unionist MLA Roy Beggs has said he is “relishing the challenge” of taking up the position of the Ulster Unionist Party’s Health spokesperson. The East Antrim Assembly Member said: “I am looking forward to joining the Committee for Health Social Services & Public Safety and taking up the role as the Ulster Unionist Party’s Health spokesman. The health portfolio is one of the most important as the services touch so many lives directly. I am in no doubt that I have a big challenge ahead of me; but it is one that I am looking forward to.’ “There are a number of issues I will be focusing on; particularly those areas that are currently under review under the Transforming Your Care Consultation such as primary care, mental health services, statutory residential homes, prevention, early intervention and integrated care. But from an East Antrim perspective there are an number of … Continue reading

Loan sharks are adding to absenteeism problem: MLA

East Antrim MLA Roy Beggs (left) highlighted the problem in a motion before the Assembly seeking more government support to tackle absenteeism. He stated: “Recently, paramilitary loan sharks have been creating an ongoing issue in my community. It has been reported to me that mothers can be left with no money to put food on the table and children can be put out to school with, perhaps, no breakfast. That is a modern day form of slavery. “How can parents and children concentrate on their education? We need a cohesive community with the removal of loan sharks and drug dealers, who are corrupting our youth. The community needs to work with the police to bring those parasites to court.” The Ulster Unionist representative, who has been pursuing issues around educational under-attainment over the past decade, has identified Northland, Sunnylands, Love Lane and Killycrot as areas of concern in relation to … Continue reading

Beggs demands answers re DFP ban on Press Association

Ulster Unionist MLA Roy Beggs has demanded answers from the Finance Minister Sammy Wilson after it emerged that a ban is currently in place on press releases being distributed from the Department of Finance and Personnel to the Press Association. The East Antrim representative said: “I am bewildered to learn that for many months there has been a ban in place by the Department of Finance and Personnel stopping their press releases from being distributed to the Press Association.’ “One of the most fundamental values of the United Kingdom is the free press and I find it deeply disturbing that efforts appear to have been made to censor the Press Association and to have an undue influence on the media.” “I have submitted questions to the Minister, Sammy Wilson, asking whether the directive to impose this ban came directly from him. If not he should advise who was responsible for … Continue reading

Beggs demands health care equality

The Ulster Unionist representative, who succeeded last week in securing an adjournment debate at Stormont, posed questions to the DUP Health Minister Edwin Poots. Mr Beggs told the Assembly that his motive for seeking the debate “can be summed up in one word: equality”, adding: “Are my East Antrim constituents getting equal treatment when it comes to accessing health and social care provision? I am concerned that many are not.” Mr Beggs, who was last week appointed UUP health spokesman, recounted decades of local hospital closures and lack of new provision, saying the recurring theme was one of “diminishing services and reducing facilities”. He added: “The designated acute hospital for the people of east Antrim is Antrim Area Hospital. I need hardly remind members of the problems and difficulties at Antrim Area Hospital over recent years, particularly in the accident and emergency department. “Another issue with Antrim Area Hospital is … Continue reading
