Beggs questions planning behind staffing levels at new Antrim Area A&E Department

Ulster Unionist Health Spokesperson Roy Beggs MLA has questioned the planning behind the staffing levels at the new Accident and Emergency Department at Antrim Area Hospital which officially opens today (Wednesday 26 June 13). Roy Beggs MLA commented; “The problems at Antrim Area Hospital’s A&E Department have been well rehearsed over the past two years and I have previously highlighted the fact that the NHS waiting target of 95% of patients being seen within 4 hours has been routinely missed by large margins. The opening of the expanded Accident and Emergency Unit at Antrim should be a cause of optimism. However the good news has again been clouded with confusion about the planned staffing levels. We have been informed by a Trust official via the media that 20 new nurses have been recruited to work in the new unit. Unionists call for probe into Gerry Kelly police footage

There has been widespread criticism of high-profile Sinn Fein politician Gerry Kelly after he stood in the way of a PSNI convoy. It comes after footage emerged of the Sinn Fein MLA being pushed some distance along a road on the front of a PSNI Land Rover, after attempting to stop a number of the vehicles. The incident occurred around the Carrick Hill area of Belfast after the Tour of the North parade, and was filmed and posted on the internet by Sinn Fein over the weekend. Sinn Fein issued a statement calling it “dangerous, reckless and provocative”. Unionists said he appeared to have been obstructing police as they conducted their duties, and the Alliance Party called his behaviour “entirely inappropriate”. The … Continue reading

Unionists hit out at Sinn Fein ‘behaviour’ at Tour of the North

UNIONIST politicians have hit out at the behaviour of Sinn Fein members Gerry Kelly and Caral NiCuilin at the ‘Tour of the North’ parade on Friday night. The Culture Minister was taken to hospital after the incident on Friday, but was discharged later that night. Sinn Fein said she was hit by a Land Rover as she tried to help her party colleague Gerry Kelly. He was carried on the front of the vehicle for a short distance. Mr Kelly said he tried to stop the Land Rover in order to speak to officers who had arrested a 16-year-old, but claimed the officer drove off, with Mr Kelly clinging to the front of the PSNI vehicle. The Police Ombudsman is investigating the incident. However DUP MLA Jonathan Craig has questioned how their behaviour fitted the standards expected of them not just as MLA’s but as a Policing Board member and … Continue reading
