Alban Maginness said he thought Mr Kelly could have been seriously injured during the incident, which followed the loyalist Tour of the North parade. Mr Kelly was carried on the front of the PSNI vehicle for a short distance. Mr Maginness said it was a “very ugly situation” that had the potential for serious disorder. There has been widespread criticism of high-profile Sinn Fein politician Gerry Kelly after he stood in the way of a PSNI convoy. It comes after footage emerged of the Sinn Fein MLA being pushed some distance along a road on the front of a PSNI Land Rover, after attempting to stop a number of the vehicles. The incident occurred around the Carrick Hill area of Belfast after the Tour of the North parade, and was filmed and posted on the internet by Sinn Fein over the weekend. Sinn Fein issued a statement calling it “dangerous, reckless and provocative”. But Mr Kelly’s behaviour, and that of some others on the day, has come in for stern criticism amid suggestions that he may have broken the law himself. UNIONIST politicians have hit out at the behaviour of Sinn Fein members Gerry Kelly and Caral NiCuilin at the ‘Tour of the North’ parade on Friday night. The Culture Minister was taken to hospital after the incident on Friday, but was discharged later that night. Sinn Fein said she was hit by a Land Rover as she tried to help her party colleague Gerry Kelly. He was carried on the front of the vehicle for a short distance. Mr Kelly said he tried to stop the Land Rover in order to speak to officers who had arrested a 16-year-old, but claimed the officer drove off, with Mr Kelly clinging to the front of the PSNI vehicle. The Police Ombudsman is investigating the incident.
