Roy to Meet Attorney General on Nichola Dickson Case

Commenting on the early release of the murderer of Ballycarry woman Nichola Dickson, Roy Beggs MLA has criticised the pre-release system- which has seen the prisoner effectively released 6 months prior to the expiry of his 11 year minimum ‘life’ sentence. The Ulster Unionist Party’s East Antrim MLA will meet the Attorney General on Thursday 14th November with Nichola’s mother and brother to discuss this case in the context of guidelines for life sentence tariffs in Northern Ireland. Mr Beggs commented: “It seems no time at all since the controversy around the lenient sentence handed out to the murderer of Nichola Dickson in Ballycarry in my constituency of East Antrim.  That fact in itself shows that the life sentence handed down in this case makes a mockery of the term ‘life sentence’.  The murderer was sentenced in June 2004 with a minimum tariff of 11 years which meant that with time … Continue reading

Beggs welcomes appointment of Chair of Inquiry into sexual exploitation of children

Ulster Unionist MLA Roy Beggs has welcomed the appointment of a Chair of the inquiry into allegations of sexual abuse of children and young people in Northern Ireland but expressed his concern that the Education Training Inspectorate is not yet signed up. Mr Beggs, who sits on the Stormont Health committee, said; “The Ulster Unionist Party welcomes the appointment of Professor Kathleen Marshall to lead an independent inquiry into child sexual exploitation in Northern Ireland. In September the Health Minister Edwin Poots announced that he would set up an independent expert-led inquiry to investigate child sexual exploitation. This should have involved the Health Inspectorate, Criminal Justice Inspectorate and the Education Training Inspectorate given their roles in protecting children. I was very disappointed to hear during the course of Edwin Poots` announcement yesterday that the Education Training Inspectorate still weren`t signed up. Given the importance of this inquiry it is vital … Continue reading

Beggs ‘saddened’ by councillor switch

UUP MLA Roy Beggs Jr has spoken of his ‘disappointment’ over news that party colleague councillor Beryl McKnight has switched to the DUP. Cllr McKnight, who was elected to represent the Carrick Castle ward in 2011, confirmed her move to the council’s main unionist party this week. The shift gives the DUP an outright majority in the chamber with nine of the 17 seats, and leaves the UUP with three councillors – Deputy Mayor John Stewart, Cllr Eric Ferguson and Cllr Andrew Wilson. In a statement, East Antrim MLA Mr Beggs said: “I am saddened and disappointed to learn that Cllr Beryl McKnight has joined another political party. “Beryl was not just an Ulster Unionist colleague but a personal friend and when I was in her home recently she gave no indication that she was thinking of leaving the Ulster Unionist Party. I am also unaware of any policy issue … Continue reading

UUP MLAs Appeal for Information on Recent ‘Disappeared’

In wake of the reaction to the showing of the BBC/RTE programme “Disappeared” on the IRA abduction, killing and secret burial of some of their victims, Ulster Unionist party MLAs Roy Beggs (East Antrim) and Leslie Cree (North Down) have repeated previous calls for information about the whereabouts of Mark Gourley and Lisa Dorrian in their constituencies.  These separate missing person incidents have been widely linked to loyalist paramilitaries. In September Police in Carrickfergus launched a murder enquiry into the disappearance of Mark Gourley who went missing in March 2009.  Lisa Dorrian has not been seen since February 2005 when she had been at a party in a caravan park in Ballyhalbert, North Down. “Anyone who has watched the programme on the Disappeared cannot fail to have been moved and upset by the dreadful callousness of the republican terrorists who carried out these acts” said Mr Beggs. “However it strikes … Continue reading
