Ulster Unionist Party East Antrim MLA, Roy Beggs, has welcomed over 60 responses to his consultation on a Scrap Metal Dealers (NI) Bill. The consultation closed on Saturday, alongside news that a spate of metal has occurred over the weekend involving power cables, telephone cables and even a gas leak caused by the theft of copper gas pipes. Mr Beggs said; “I’ve been extremely heartened by the volume of responses to my consultation on a Scrap Metal Dealers Bill for Northern Ireland, and I will be working hard to analyse the results over the coming weeks in order to bring swiftly about the introduction of a Bill to the Assembly floor, should the responses deem it necessary. “From a preliminary overview of the results, it does appear that there is an overwhelming public feeling toward the need for legislation, and this is also supported by the PSNI, Transport NI and … Continue reading

Beggs Welcomes £32m Ryobi investment in Carrickfergus

Ulster Unionist MLA for East Antrim, Mr Roy Beggs, has welcomed the news that Japanese-owned Ryobi Aluminium Casting is to create 100 extra jobs as part of a £32m investment in their factory at Carrickfergus.  This announcement brings the total number of employees up to 386 at the Carrickfergus plant. Roy Beggs MLA said; “This is fantastic news for Carrickfergus, with new jobs secured, in addition to investment in new plant and machinery.  Ryobi has been an important employer in East Antrim since it was attracted to Carrickfergus over twenty years ago.   This investment is recognition of the skills of the local workforce, the improving communications links and importance of the locally available natural gas supply which minimises energy costs.  “Ryobi has become established as a mainstay of the local economy.  I would congratulate Invest NI for their role in providing financial assistance to secure this expansion.  It secures vital manufacturing jobs … Continue reading

Sale of e-cigarettes to under-18s should be banned – Roy Beggs

Ulster Unionist Party Health spokesperson Roy Beggs has added his voice to NI Chest, Heart and Stroke Association’s call for e-cigarettes to be banned from sale to children and young people under 18. Roy Beggs MLA said: “Nicotine is a highly addictive drug and so I believe we in Northern Ireland should also be banning the sale of e-cigarettes to under-18s. It is recognised that nicotine in any form has adverse health effects and therefore it is important that our young people do not become addicted whilst unaware of the risks involved. “I believe Northern Ireland should follow the Westminster proposal to ban the sale of e-cigarettes to under-18s in England ,and by many schools in the US to ban it on their premises, in order to ensure that our young people are not taking up a habit which may unwittingly act as a stepping stone to the real thing. … Continue reading

Ulster Unionist Economy spokesperson Sandra Overend MLA has welcomed the announced £5million investment in new operations at the Caterpillar factory in Larne. Mrs Overend said: “This is the second very positive announcement that Caterpillar are diversifying their local operations and keeping skilled local jobs in recent times.   The new operation to produce articulated truck axles in Larne expands Northern Ireland’s manufacturing base, and proves again that we are still on the world map when it comes to engineering.  It is encouraging news especially in the context of figures showing that the Northern Ireland economy grew by 1.6% between July and September 2013.” Ulster Unionist Party MLA for East Antrim Roy Beggs added: “700 jobs went at FG Wilsons in 2012 following the relocation of a major part of their generator manufacturing business to the Far East 18 months ago. Therefore the news that the company – now rebadged under the … Continue reading
