Beggs Supports Bike Week

Ulster Unionist representative Roy Beggs MLA has shown his support for bike week by taking part in an organised cycle from Parliament Buildings to the Department for Regional Development Head Office near City Hall.   Roy Beggs MLA, himself a keen cyclist, said “I would encourage people to take up cycling as there are very clear benefits to our health and to the environment.  With cycle lanes incorporated into the design of the new and improved A2 Shore Road, this will provide an option for Carrickfergus and Greenisland residents to cycle, as they will be linked to the greater Belfast cycle network.”

Care homes announcement leaves some still harbouring fears for future

“Unanswered questions” still hover over the future of Northern Ireland’s public care homes following a call for fresh reviews of them. The Health and Social Care Board (HSCB) set out plans for fresh assessments of services and needs across the Province after last year’s furore surrounding plans by many trusts to shut their facilities. Health trusts are being asked to review their stances on new admissions, and the health minister pledged all residents will be able to stay put for as long as they wish – adding he wants to explore the idea of turning such homes into “broader hubs for older people’s services” too. HSCB said proposals for closure could only be made if there were no permanent residents, and the relevant trust had ruled out alternative uses for the home. But UUP health spokesman Roy Beggs said some homes had not let in new residents for years, and … Continue reading

Care homes admissions review urged

Health Minister Edwin Poots intervened in the row over care homes 12 June 2014 Health trusts are to be asked to review their admissions policies for older people entering residential care homes in Northern Ireland. Acting board chief executive Fionnuala McAndrew said: “I recognise that this process has caused anxiety for residents, their families and carers but I hope that the minister’s statements and our commitment to them will provide the reassurance needed to ensure that any further changes can be managed in a way that does not cause any further concerns. … Continue reading

Crippling lack of leadership is destroying the future viability of our care homes – Beggs

Ulster Unionist Party health spokesperson Roy Beggs MLA has reacted furiously to the announcement from the Health and Social Care Board that it is commencing yet another consultation on whether or not a number of care homes across Northern Ireland should be allowed to admit new permanent residents. The East Antrim MLA said; “Last year it was announced that most of Northern Ireland’s public residential care homes were being shut. The fact that a number of the Health and Social Care Trusts made very similar statements within a short space of time of each other, matters of days even, gave me the impression that the decision to close most of our statutory residential care homes was premeditated.  Following a backlash from residents, their families and many ordinary members of the community, the Minister was forced into halting the flawed proposals. “The future of these homes has always been dependent on the … Continue reading
