Beggs Represents East Antrim at WW1 Centenary Service

East Antrim representative Roy Beggs MLA attended the centenary service at St Anne’s Cathedral to commemorate the start of WW1. Roy Beggs said “It is important to remember those who fought in the War in order that Europe could retain its freedom.  I would urge East Antrim residents to visit the MAC  before the 17th August  to view a Graham Gingles presentation which is named after Robert McGookin, a local East Antrim man who fought in WW1 who wrote a series of war diaries.”

Beggs Contacts Rivers Agency Following Landslide on Altarichard Road

Ulster Unionist Party MLA for East Antrim, Roy Beggs Jr. has commented on land subsidence on the Altarichard Road, between Magherahoney and Cushendall/Cushendun over Slieveanorra (known locally as Orra) Mountain, after over 100 Tonnes of material was washed down from the adjacent hillside. Roy Beggs MLA said “I am pleased that Road Service have engaged with contractors to survey the suite. I hope that the road structure and culverts remain intact and that it is possible to open the road as soon as possible again for local farmers and residents.” “I have written to the Rivers Agency to that they look at the drainage in the area in order to minimise the risk of reoccurrence in the future.”

Beggs Welcomes Outline Planning Permission for Howden’s Quay

Ulster Unionist MLA for East Antrim, Roy Beggs Jr, has welcomed outlined planning permission for a developer led improvement to the A2 at the derelict Howden’s Quay site on the route into Larne. Roy Beggs MLA said “The Howden’s Quay area has been derelict for a long time so any work to rejuvenate the area has to be welcomed.  The site could be best described as an eye sore at present, and I welcome the outline planning permission that has been granted for the redevelopment of the area which will see housing, industrial units and leisure facilities established. The much needed work will provide short term job opportunities in the construction sector and then provide longer term opportunities in leisure and industry for Larne.  The redevelopment will also rectify issues on the road that has seen traffic systems installed in recent times, therefore allowing for freer movement of vehicles along … Continue reading

MLA in free travel for elderly plea

Ulster Unionist Assembly member Roy Beggs has voiced support for the UUP Transport Minister Dany Kennedy’s call that the concessionary travel scheme should be protected by the Finance Minister and the NI Executive. The East Antrim MLA said “It is my belief that free travel is beneficial to older people as it facilitates visits to friends and family, therefore keeping them active and independent. It reduces the potential for older people becoming isolated and so has a beneficial health impact.” Mr Beggs added: “I understand that as of yet, the Finance Minister Simon Hamilton, of the DUP, has not proposed to protect the concessionary travel funding.” He concluded: “I would hope that the Finance Minister and the Executive listens to Danny Kennedy and unanimously agree to continue to support free public transport for older persons.” The Executive has to find £100 million to pay fines for failing to introduce benefits … Continue reading
