Attacking Danny Kennedy will not disguise DUP’s poor record in Government – Beggs

Roy Beggs MLA has said that party political attacks on the Regional Development Minister, Danny Kennedy, will not disguise the DUP’s poor record in Government. Mr Beggs said: “The motion brought before the Assembly today was nothing other than a party political attack on Danny Kennedy.  Trevor Clarke set the bar from the outset when he opened the debate with a personal attack on the Minister which lasted four minutes and twenty two seconds. “Criticism of Danny Kennedy’s management of his Department’s finances seems rich from a member of a Party that very soon will be asking the Assembly to support a “phantom budget”.   A budget that asks us to abandon reality for fantasy and yet the DUP had the audacity to support this motion today criticising a Minister’s ability to effectively manage and maintain his budgets! “The DUP and Sinn Fein can attempt to distract from the current financial crisis by … Continue reading

Over 230 patients had operations cancelled over three month period

APPROXIMATELY eight operations a day were cancelled in the Western Trust between January and March this year.  Outside of Belfast, the Western Trust axed the most non-elective procedures out of the remaining three health trusts. In total between January 1, 2015 and March 31, 2015, 234 non-urgent elective operations were cancelled, while the Belfast Trust, which had the highest amount of operations, cancelled 271 operations. In January alone the Western Trust had the highest amount of operations pulled as 162 patients were told their planned procedures would be rescheduled, which is in stark contrast to the one non-elective operation which was cancelled by the Southern Trust during the same month. The figures were revealed this week as a result of a question by the UUP MLA Roy Beggs. He had asked the Health Minister to detail the period which elective surgery was cancelled and how many operations were cancelled. It … Continue reading

700 operations cancelled in Northern Ireland’s overstretched hospitals

More than 700 elective operations were cancelled in the first three months of this year Simon Hamilton By Adrian Rutherford – 02 June 2015 More than 700 operations were cancelled in the first three months of 2015 because hospitals could not cope with demand. Ten non-emergency procedures a day were postponed on average in January and February. The Belfast Trust and Western Trust were worst affected, axing almost 500 operations between them. The alarming figures lay bare the extent of the crisis caused by a chaotic winter at Northern Ireland’s under-pressure emergency departments. Trusts were forced to axe routine surgery after AE units were swamped by patients. And there are warnings that the situation will get even worse, with people’s lives being put at risk. Patricia McKeown from the health workers’ union Unison said a £19m rescue package to deal with the problem two years ago has now been slashed … Continue reading

Beggs highlights need for better Court Funds Office Stewardship of funds

Roy Beggs MLA, who unearthed burdensome administrative processes and poor under investment of some £87m held by the Court Funds Office (CFO) in low interest bearing deposit accounts has supported the Public Accounts Committee recommendations that independent financial expertise was required within the CFO governance structures and that carefully managed pooled investment funds should be used to improve returns. Roy Beggs said, “Holding almost twice their annual expenditure in a low interest bearing accounts is failing to get a reasonable return for the vulnerable clients that whose funds are managed by the Court Funds Office. It is also clear that there are burdensome, out of date administrative processes being used by those managing the Court Funds Office. This bureaucratic administration must also be paid for by vulnerable clients. There is a clear need for independent finance advice within the management structures of the CFO and a need for modernisation of … Continue reading
