Assembly Speaker should resign now over BBC Spotlight revelations – Beggs

East Antrim Ulster Unionist Party Assemblyman Roy Beggs MLA has called for Robin Newton to resign as Speaker of the Assembly now, rather than wait until the election of a new Speaker. Roy Beggs MLA, a former Deputy Speaker in the Northern Ireland Assembly, said: “This issue goes to the heart of public confidence in politics in Northern Ireland at a time when the credibility of Stormont and local politics is already at an all-time low. “The office of Speaker should be above reproach and rather than resign after he chairs the election of a new Speaker, Robin Newton should simply go now. He should have resigned back in December when he showed a lack of impartiality. “What we need now is a radical investigation into the Social Investment Fund (SIF), its operation and in particular the role of Special Advisers in its formulation. It needs to get to the … Continue reading

The Ulster Unionist representative had previously attended the public consultation meeting in Mossley Mill along with Cllr Andrew Wilson, where the MLA addressed the meeting outlining his concerns relating to the in year cuts and the potential consequences to health care locally. Responding to the consultation, Roy Beggs, UUP Health Spokesperson submitted the following response before last weeks (5/10/17) response cut off: “Firstly I wish to register my disappointment that the public meeting in the Whiteabbey area, where the most significant cuts were being proposed with the 2 rehabilitation wards being closed, took place during an afternoon and not during the evening when it would have been more accessible for the many members of the public who would … Continue reading

Welcome and scepticism for paramilitary task force

Observers from across Northern Ireland have broadly welcomed the formation of the new paramilitary task force – but have expressed some scepticism about its role and aims. Last week Chief Constable George Hamilton revealed that a new joint task force to tackle loyalist and republican crime groups will receive £25m over the next five years. He said Northern Ireland has around 100 organised crime groups. Pastor Jack McKee Shankill Road pastor Jack McKee, who has been intimidated by paramilitaries, gave a cautious welcome. “I would say, I always welcome any response from the PSNI and other authorities to tackle paramilitary abuses, criminality and drug dealing,” he said. “And I welcome the chief constable’s comment that, ‘the fear and misery caused in our communities by paramilitaries is unacceptable and should not be tolerated’. However, I am so disappointed that this is such a Johnny-come-lately attitude as some of us have been … Continue reading

Northern Ireland will soon lag behind rest of UK on organ donation – Beggs

Ulster Unionist Health Spokesperson Roy Beggs MLA has warned that Northern Ireland will soon have the most out-dated organ donation system in the UK and has called for Northern Ireland to be included in the Prime Minister’s planned consultation for England. Roy Beggs said: “I am delighted that the Prime Minister has announced her desire for England to move to a new soft opt-out organ donation system, whereby people will be deemed to have consented unless they have indicated their wish to opt out. There is simply no question that the UK’s ability to help people who need transplants is limited by the number of organ donors that come forward. “It is an absolute tragedy that people continue to die every year while waiting on a transplant. “Wales already has a soft opt-out system, Scotland has said it will move to such a system shortly and this consultation in England … Continue reading
