Man due in court over stabbing incident

Detectives have charged a 31-year-old male with a number of offences in relation to an incident in Co Antrim over the weekend. He is expected to appear before Limavady Magistrates Court later this morning (Wednesday). The charges include three counts of attempted murder, affray, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and possessing an article with a blade or point in a public place. They are in connection with an incident on Main Street in Ballycarry during the early hours of Saturday, August 11, when three men, two aged in their 30s and one aged in his 60s, sustained stab wounds to their body as a result of an incident outside a public house. Carrick’s Sullatober site is ‘Recycling Centre of the Year’

Mid and East Antrim Borough Council celebrated success at the Sustainable Ireland Awards. The local government authority won the Safety in Waste category for its Waveney Road Household Recycling Centre in Ballymena as well as first place in the Household Waste Recycling Centre of the Year for its Sullatober site in Carrickfergus. MEA was also a finalist the categories of Sustainable Company of the Year, Food Waste Prevention and Management, and Waste Management Team of the Year. The Mayor, Cllr Lindsay Millar, said: “We are delighted to have taken two top spots at these awards. Man threatened with gun on main road in Carrickfergus

A man is believed to have been threatened with a firearm in Carrickfergus. Detectives are appealing for witnesses to the incident, which happened on Saturday along one of the town’s main arterial routes during daylight hours. The PSNI said: “We are trying to trace the movements of a large silver or light-coloured car that was being driven erratically on the town’s Victoria Road around 3.15pm on Saturday, December 29. It was reported that the male passenger of this vehicle got out of the vehicle in Prince Andrew Way and threatened the driver of a stationary vehicle with what he believed was a firearm.” They asked anyone who saw the incident or has dash-cam footage to call police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. Whitehead group commended for work to welcome Syrian refugees

A retired GP has received national recognition for her pioneering work to welcome a Syrian refugee family to Whitehead. Jeni Mcaughey was commended in the Volunteer of the Year category at the first Community Sponsorship Awards ceremony in London. Under the Government’s Community Sponsorship Scheme, local groups take lead responsibility for supporting a refugee family in their neighbourhood. It allows Syrian families who are currently living in a refugee camps in the Middle East to come to the UK through a safe and legal route. Around 140 community sponsorship groups have now formed around the country, and refugee families are arriving through sponsorship on an almost weekly basis. Jeni founded and leads the Small World Community Sponsorship group in Whitehead. It has raised thousands of pounds and found a house for a family, who are expected to arrive in early 2019. NIFRS campaign raises £13k for charities

A retired firefighter from Whitehead has spearheaded a charity-boosting health initiative. Northern Ireland Fire Rescue Service (NIFRS) raised £13,228 for Northern Ireland Chest Heart Stroke and MindWise through its ‘Healthy Body, Healthy Mind’ campaign. This enabled all three organisations to work together to promote mental and physical well-being amongst NIFRS staff and the wider community. Core to many of the fundraising events, which took place throughout the year-long campaign, was raising awareness of the importance of keeping both your mental and physical health in good shape. The effort was led by NIFRS Charity Champion Firefighter Noel McKee, from Whitla Fire Station, who has since retired from the service.
