Beggs praises Age NI’s campaign to increase pensioners’ financial support

East Antrim Ulster Unionist MLA Roy Beggs has welcomed the launch of Age NI ‘s Let’s Talk Money- a campaign to help older people access all the state benefits they are entitled to and has urged pensions to check that they are receiving all of their entitlements . Age NI is the organisation formed from the coming together of Age Concern and Help the Aged. They have published a new guide to claiming benefits for pensioners, available on their website at http://www.ageuk.org.uk/northern-ireland/money-matters/ Roy Beggs MLA said: “The East Antrim area has historically had very poor uptake of benefits and entitlements, especially from single females of pensionable age- compared to other constituencies. Across Northern Ireland as a whole it is estimated that £200M in benefits is left unclaimed every year. That means that local older people, many of whom have worked and paid their national insurance contributions all their lives, are … Continue reading

Emerging Proposals on Residential Homes “Shocking”

Ulster Unionist MLA Roy Beggs Jnr has said he is shocked at emerging proposals that, if implemented, will see all NHS Trust Residential homes in Northern Ireland being closed down by 2015. He was speaking after all 6 East Antrim MLAs were invited to Ballymena for a meeting with the Chief Executive of the Northern Health and Care Trust, Sean Donaghy last Friday. Roy Beggs MLA said: “I was aware that the Compton Report- Transforming Your Care, which was commissioned and welcomed by Health Minister Edwin Poots last year reiterated the overall long term policy goal of the Department of Health to transfer resources in elder care from institution settings to care in the community and home. The Review also indicated an increasing use of the private sector, and spoke of a reduction of residential home places. However the Trust appears to have interpreted Compton as meaning the closure of … Continue reading

Investigation into Millbay Sewage Flooding Complete

Ulster Unionist MLA for East Antrim Roy Beggs Jnr has said progress has been made in finding a solution to the problems with the newly installed mains sewerage system at Millbay, Islandmagee. The local representative was speaking after a presentation was made to local residents and Environmental Health Officers by consultants URS who have just concluded a 9 month investigation on behalf of Northern Ireland Water. Mr Beggs said: “Problems with flooding and pollution from domestic sewage predate the installation of first time mains sewerage at Millbay over 5 years ago. However it has been a source of immense frustration to local people that there has been a catalogue of issues with the new system and the Sewage Pumping Station which pumps the Millbay sewage up to Mulloughbuoy for secondary treatment and coastal discharge. It was really only last summer after concerted lobbying and a meeting organised by my office … Continue reading

Blazes ‘could have resulted in fatalities’ – MLA

Published on Monday 14 May 2012 16:35 LAST week’s arson attacks in Greenisland could easily have got out of control and resulted in fatalities, East Antrim MLA Roy Beggs has warned. “With three separate malicious fires destroying property in Greenisland within a short period of time, we are fortunate that no one has been killed or seriously injured,” Mr Beggs said. “The property of citizens has been destroyed; in one instance two cars, a caravan and an attached garage have been destroyed, the house roof almost caught fire and the oil tank was in danger of igniting. If either had happened many other properties would have caught fire and more lives would have been in great danger.” The UUP Assemblyman also praised the Fire and rescue Service for their quick actions in dealing with the incidents. “I would call on the local community to report any suspicious activity they have … Continue reading

Petition for disabled changing facilities

Published on Saturday 12 May 2012 16:49 CARRICKFERGUS Senior Gateway Club has set up a petition to install changing facilities for disabled people in the Borough. “There are disabled toilets in Carrick but there is nowhere, for example, where a carer could change a person with learning disabilities or an elderly person could get changed,” said Gateway volunteer Thomas Haighton. “We have managed to locate premises in Carrick for the facility, but the next step will be to get funding in place. “This is why we have set up the petition for local people to sign; we will place paper copies in businesses around the town and people can also look at the Carrickfergus and District Senior Gateway Facebook page.” East Antrim MLA Roy Beggs has lent his support to the campaign. “I believe there are wider efforts going on to try and get at least one of these facilities … Continue reading
