Beggs supports calls for Executive to do more to combat suicide

Ulster Unionist Party Health Spokesperson Roy Beggs MLA has given his support to an Assembly motion calling on the Executive to do more to tackle the rising number of suicides in Northern Ireland. The East Antrim representative said: “With recorded suicide rates in NI more than doubling in the past 30 years, increasing from 7.7 in 1980 to 17.4 per 100,000 in 2010, it is clear that in the modern society, we face a huge challenge to bring about a reduction in the apparently ever increasing number of suicides. There has been a significant increase in the numbers of suicides occurring since 2003. I notice according to Mike Tomlinson, that this is against a back drop of lower and generally slowly declining levels in England, Scotland and even the most deprived English region, the North East. There has been a particular increase in male suicides since 2003. Statistics show that … Continue reading

Sinn Fein’s Mitchel McLaughlin was elected as the new principal deputy speaker …

Sinn Fein’s Mitchel McLaughlin was elected as the new principal deputy speaker of the Northern Ireland Assembly, on 15 April 2013. A vote to elect him as deputy speaker was endorsed after the DUP first minister asked him to clarify his support for policing. Peter Robinson expressed concern after reading a Belfast Telegraph poll which suggested a quarter of Sinn Fein delegates to the Ard Fheis (party conference) still felt violence was justified. A second vote on allowing Mr McLaughlin to act as principal deputy speaker passed but was opposed by independent, UUP, TUV and SDLP members. Mr McLaughlin replaces his party colleague Francie Molloy who recently succeeded Martin McGuinness as MP for the Mid-Ulster constituency. Mr Molloy has been replaced as MLA by former prisoner Ian Patrick Milne. Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness proposed Mr McLaughlin for the role of deputy speaker and thanked Mr Molloy for his “positive … Continue reading

Numbers Significantly up on East Antrim Railway line

East Antrim Ulster Unionist MLA Roy Beggs has welcomed the significant increase in railway passenger numbers on the Larne Line, and suggested that Translink should move swiftly to increase the use of 6 car train sets on express services to accommodate more customers. Mr Beggs said: “After being starved of investment for years it is gratifying to note the change for the better for rail passengers under an Ulster Unionist Minister for Regional Development- Danny Kennedy. The new trains and facilities on the Larne line have led to a significant increase in passenger numbers using the railway line. Figures given to me as an answer to a question I placed in the Assembly show that the latest monthly passenger numbers for the Larne line have increased by nearly 21,000 compared to the equivalent time period just one year ago. I always said ‘provide the service and the passengers will return’, … Continue reading
