Northern Trust to close care homes

24 April 2013 Last updated at 17:06 ET The future of residential care services will be discussed by the trust The Northern Health Trust has said it eventually intends to close all the residential homes in its area. In a statement, the trust said it would close half of its nine homes in the next three years and, in the longer term, stop providing residential care entirely. It comes after a union criticised the planned move. Unison said the closures would remove any choice for vulnerable people. The trust said: “At present the trust manages nine residential homes and we propose that no more long term admissions are made to any of our homes. “We would intend to close up to 50% of our homes over the next three years and in the longer term stop providing statutory residential care entirely. “Some private residential care will be available.” On Thursday, … Continue reading

Beggs Says Raze the Maze

Ulster Unionist Patty MLA Roy Beggs Jnr has voiced his support for a petition calling for the prison buildings at the Maze Prison site to be de-listed and demolished and for the “Conflict Transformation Centre” to be relocated. The Ulster Unionist Party, TUV and UKIP have launched the petition. In a joint statement, issued by Mike Nesbitt MLA, Tom Elliott MLA, Jim Allister MLA and David McNarry MLA, they say: “We call upon Sinn Fein and the DUP to put an immediate halt to the project which sites a ‘Conflict Transformation Centre’ at the Maze. We also call upon Sinn Fein and the DUP to de-list and demolish the prison buildings. “Over the course of a number of months we met and listened to innocent victims groups right across Northern Ireland. 200000 more tickets sold on the Larne Line

Transport Minister Danny Kennedy welcomed the 2.1 million passenger journeys, up from 1.9 million last year – a view echoed by his Ulster Unionist colleague, Roy Beggs Jnr, but he also warned that Translink may be in danger of becoming a victim of its own success. Responding to a question on passenger use from the East Antrim MLA, Mr Kennedy told the Assembly: “A total of 2,119,960 passenger journeys were made on the Larne railway line up to the middle of February this year, compared to 1,923,416 in 2011/12. This is a significant increase and these figures are evidence of the quality and choice that public transport offers to the travelling public. “Statistics show that Translink has experienced a significant increase in passenger journeys on its rail and bus services across Northern Ireland. We have invested heavily in buying new buses and trains to make public transport a more attractive … Continue reading

Beggs Calls for Flexibility Over Fallen Animal Deadline

Ulster Unionist MLA Roy Beggs has called for a common sense and flexible approach by the Department of Agriculture with regards to the Friday 19 April deadline for the ‘fallen animal scheme’. Under the scheme funding is being made available to meet the costs of collection and disposal of fallen animals and make hardship payments to farmers whose animals died as a result of the snow storm on 21 and 22 March 2013. Roy Beggs MLA said: “Given the near miraculous discovery of two ‘lost sheep’ this week in the Antrim hills, I would hope that the Minister takes need of my concern about the deadline which I made during a recent assembly Question time. The thaw has been very slow in coming to some high ground in East Antrim.” In Stormont Mr Beggs had said: “ I too express concern about the proposed deadline of 19 April for the … Continue reading
