McDevitt in plea over parade rows

Gerry Kelly (centre) tried to stop a police Land Rover during scuffles in the Peters Hill area 23 June 2013 Rival politicians have been urged to step back from tit-for-tat rows after a Sinn Fein minister was injured during a contentious parade in Northern Ireland. SDLP MLA Conall McDevitt said his party was deeply concerned about the policing of the Tour of the North demonstration in Belfast on Friday, which he said had left many people annoyed. The Police Ombudsman is investigating an incident during which Sinn Fein’s Caral N Chuiln, the Stormont Culture Minister, was hurt trying to help party colleague, Gerry Kelly MLA, as he tried to stop a police Land Rover during scuffles in the Peters Hill area. Both representatives were at a protest by nationalist residents opposed to the annual Orange Order parade. They have come under attack from the DUP, UUP and TUV, who claimed … Continue reading

Roy Hails Jobs Boost at Millbrook Factory

Roy Beggs Jnr, Ulster Unionist Party MLA for East Antrim who lives near the Millbrook factory, has described a major jobs announcement for a Larne based pharmaceutical company Terumo BCT as ‘very exciting’: “If, as has been announced, these are 416 brand new jobs, then that is a very exciting and significant boost in employment opportunities for the people of Larne and surrounding area. The old ‘Ivex’ site at Millbrook has been a main stay of valuable employment for the local people over the years, through numerous name changes and company takeovers.” Mr Beggs added that in the context of heavy job losses at nearby FG Wilsons last year, it was essential that new jobs are delivered on the ground. The UUP MLA said: “One of the recent criticisms of Invest NI and the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment is that there have been numerous announcements of ‘promoted’ jobs … Continue reading

No Reassurance from Health Minister on A&E Waiting Times

East Antrim UUP MLA Roy Beggs has again raised the issue of waiting times at Casualty Units in Northern Ireland, in particular at Antrim Area Hospital. Questioning the Minister at Stormont, Mr Beggs said: During March and April, the main accident and emergency units in Northern Ireland saw the lowest proportion of patients treated within four hours ever recorded.  The figures show that one third of patients at Antrim Area Hospital are not seen within four hours and that, at the Causeway Hospital, it is about 30% of patients.  How can the Minister be confident that we are seeing something more significant than the normal seasonal adjustment as we approach the summer months?  How can he be sure that we are seeing significant improvement and changes and are starting to reach the 95% target that exists everywhere in the United Kingdom?” Replying, Health Minister Poots could give no assurances that … Continue reading

Need to Raise Awareness of Endometriosis

Roy has spoken in an Assembly debate on Endometriosis, a common condition in which small pieces of the womb lining (the endometrium) are found outside the womb. “That this Assembly calls on the Minister of Health, Social Services and Public Safety to initiate and expedite an inquiry into the urgent need for an integrated endometriosis service to address the severe suffering experienced by women with this condition across Northern Ireland.”  Mr Beggs: I, too, support the motion. Endometriosis affects thousands of women in Northern Ireland and hundreds of thousands of women in the United Kingdom. In a recent Assembly answer to a question from the Chair of the Committee, the Health Minister indicated that some 1,155 hospital admissions in Northern Ireland in 2011-12 were as a result of diagnosis of endometriosis. The lack of awareness of the condition is of particular concern, and that is why I welcome this debate. … Continue reading
