Call to strengthen law and curb metal crime

A call has been made for a change in the law to break the spiralling trend of metal theft in Northern Ireland. Today the UUP’s Roy Beggs has called for people to respond to a consultation over his Scrap Metal Dealers Bill (Private Members Bill), which aims to end cash trading and create an audit trail for scrap metal transactions. East Antrim MLA Mr Beggs hopes the bill can put the brakes on the “1,500-plus metal thefts occurring annually in Northern Ireland”. We need to change the law to help deter Metal Theft – Roy Beggs

Roy Beggs, Ulster Unionist MLA for East Antrim, who is holding consultation events for MLA’s and Scrap Dealers is also asking for the public to respond to his Scrap Metal Dealers Bill (Private Member’s Bill) consultation which closes on 1 February 2014; Roy Beggs is proposing to end cash trading in Scrap Metal and to create an audit trail for scrap metal transactions, so inhibiting the 1500+ metal thefts occurring annually in NI.
